If I can threadjack just a little, it's also nice to know that SJ Games has been re-releasing a lot of their old stuff via pdf. For example, many of the Conan adventures have been recently released. Steve Jackson Games

A lot of third edition stuff is still available in hard copy form at very reasonable prices as well. Warehouse 23 - GURPS

West End Games' d6 System is pretty robust with game/setting books for multiple genres, and is free for download from RPGNow.

I think it would be helpful if we knew what sort of style of play you were going to be focusing on. System matters a lot for ease of ability to express your preferences, and systems such as GURPS, d20, and Savage Worlds are quite different.

There are lots of systems able to handle the story you're talking about, many of which are freely available. It's really your style that will determine how best to meet your needs.

You've nothing to fear- that poster was a spammer. He was clever enough to have his spam posted in a color that matched the background of the site, so it was effectively invisible.

But he didn't fool me- I've seen that trick (and others) before, and reported him to the Mods.

For another system that would handle both fantasy and modern settings fine, you could check out Atlas Game's WaRP system. Its a 28 page pdf available for free off of their website and is a pretty barebones engine, but I was able to take it and make a far future sci fi with a quick three page houserule list.

Character creation is quick and easy, and very rules light I might add, but it does create characters with depth that have a home in the fiction of whatever game you might play. And while the traits comprise a dice pool, the core of add 'em up and compare is there much like D&D, instead of something like WoD's success system.

Fantasy Craft and Spycraft 2.0 are reasonably compatible. They have differences to account for, but they could work if you like d20 and M&M's too much a departure from class/level for you.
