I'm pretty sure that was his point.
"D&D" belongs to all of us.....but mostly it belongs to the people making the money from it. ;)
Ask a random person on the street and they'll probably ignore you....i mean.....they'll likely think any RPG is D&D.
My joy comes from the seriousness these conversations take on. The high scoring D&D games that I take part in are a close second.

If a game you are playing has no win state, isn't it just an activity you are engaging in to pass the time?

@SlyFlourish suggests being the players (characters?) biggest fan. One would assume that any prep is in service to the relationship that exists in the current game between the DM and the players. After playing together long enough the DM should be able to predict (at least a little bit) how...
