D&D 5E [Poll] How does your group do hit points per level?

Max HP for all levels. Taking the average waters down the difference between classes. More HP means less I as the DM have to worry about, hit them with a tough fight and its fine. Finally it makes it easier to string together more encounters without having to rest the party.

D&D 5E Square grid, what's the difference between a square and a circle?

You can easily convert to radias combat, but it has to be everything not just AoE spells. Circle spell on square grid means you have partial squares, so you would have to account for those in the rules. You could use a pixel circle, but that is complex and doesn't add much for the trouble

    D&D 5E The Missing Equipment

I would keep the shield as is, size and material don't really make a lot of difference as long as you know how to use it. But if you added an extra feature to a shield it would take it down to a +1. So crossbow, spiked, throwing, cutting edged, used as part of dual weilding (YouTube sanatan...

    D&D 5E Doing 5ed without classes.

There was a feature like that in 3e unearthed arcana I think. It had three different progressions, combat, skill, magic. You would start off with your base class then every level pick up abilities from a list, kinda like how feats work but a bunch of class abilities. That's what I would do...

D&D 5E New Session Prep Method

My fallback is to use language translators and word scramble. my current campaign they are located in a land I'm using a lot of historic Celtic and Pict history, so i just think of an adjective or noun that describes something about the character i want to use. Just now I put in Vase Seller and...

    D&D 5E Can Dragonborn play a flute?

I had a player that created a dragonborn fighter and was giving him a musical instrument, he wanted to use a flute. I looked at the picture in phb and couldn't decide if they had fully functional lips like humans or if it was more reptilian. I know there isn't likely to be an official...

D&D 5E Magic items and Technology of the less popular Races

You are missing the facet that they typically have less resources and in general are not very intelligently creative, more cunning. So without something that already exists as an example they can't create something from scratch. Elven cloak enhances an elves natural abilities, the goblins would...

D&D 5E Magic items and Technology of the less popular Races

my initial thoughts are they take what they can get, so who do goblins war with? elves and dwarves are classic. so that means goblins will have dwarf and elf magic items. but then the good races design magic items that don't work with goblinoid, or only work on their own race. now goblins try...

D&D 5E Pros and Cons of using the average damage on the Monster's stat block.

I dont see why you have to make a decision. I mix it up throughout the fight. Typically if pcs are fresh I tend to use averages because even max damage is not a threat. I also tend to use average numbers if the enemies are mook/fillers; basically if an NPC has a number next to its name (Goblin...

    D&D 5E Valuable Stuff

I personally like giving items like that two gp values. one is pawn number, the other is the true value. the players know the pawn value right off (just like real world "I have this old tv, I could probably make 20 bucks from it"). but the thing is sometimes the true value is lower than pawn...

    D&D 5E Another Generalist homebrew

My thoughts of generalist wizard is a spell for every situation. So I would make an ability that you can swap out spells quickly. Something like once a day you can swap a spell known for another spell of the same school. I don't have phb on me so I don't remember the exact rules for swapping out...

D&D 5E Scaling the number of off-hand attacks?

TornadoCreator brings up a valid point, though not how he meant it. rather than give twf more damage why not give more defense. spit-balling but maybe allow an extra reaction for an enemy who provokes opportunity attack, or allow once a short rest to add a d6 to AC to avoid taking damage...

D&D 5E Scaling the number of off-hand attacks?

If i was of mind to give the two weapon pcs more of an advantage, I wouldn't give them more attacks but maybe allow adding the offhand damage roll to successive attacks. this means each attack would do an additional d6 (or d8 with feat). so no better at hitting more enemies but able to keep up...

D&D 5E House Rules That Make The Game Better

I use a custom xp chart where players level up every hundred xp, I assign xp based on encounter difficulty. Moderate encounters are worth about 10xp, difficult encounters go up to 35xp (+3 challenge rating) and 1xp for easy (-7 challenge rating). The other house rule that I think everybody...

Another "Armour as DR" Thread (sort of)

subdual damage I don't know if there are rules for subdual damage in 5th, but I have used DR into subdual damage in 3.5 & of with success. So the enemy would still take damage, but could easily be healed, and made killing things less likely adding a good guy factor to players and also making...
