    D&D 4E 4E sceptics - what do you like?

    - race actually matters now - skill consolidation - save defenses - no iterative attacks - less christmass tree effect - casters need +X 'weapons' too - abandoning vancian casting systems - attempt to balance class powers - power sources - consolidation of planes - alignment less important -...

Sooo, that's my players certain not to be subscribing to DDI...

Agreed. $120 yearly is -way- more than I'm willing to pay for this.

    Diagonals revisited

It sounds to me like the problem then is not that you can move diagonally but that every other thing in the area will be shoving you a square or two every round. So 4e combat is a combat exercise that involves more shoving than actually attacking... but why would I be interested in playing a...

    'Build' Madness.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that feats no longer exist in trees at all and will generally have no prerequisites other than tier. Instead many feats will just get a bonus if you also have another feat or two. This might be a very good thing if it both eliminates the need to pre-plan a...

    Chess and diagonals

Rock/paper/scissors FTW: the only game that was ever truly non-symmetrically balanced for all possible play options... at least until the splatbooks ruined it, of course.

How Would You Design Fourth Edition?

My 4e? Character Creation: Point-buy stats with no middleman terms Existing skills consolidated into thematic groups Saves, initiative, and BAB (by weapon group) converted into skills Skills matched with attributes depending on circumstances, WhiteWolf style No classes... all...

    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

I had a similar reaction: I was excited for 4e but this reveal slammed on the brakes for me. I'd much rather see classes as a concept hit the burn pile but had resigned myself to accepting them as a D&Dism... so long as they were ability groups, not video-gamey job titles. Color me...

Warlocks with wands, staffs and daggers?

I'm certain every class will have a +X something-or-other they want to have in hand at all times. Making all classes equally item-dependent (though generally less dependent overall) seems to have been a design goal.

    Risk Rage

Bah, South America is a better bet. Australia campers have to march through half the world before they get anywhere worth conquering, thus they usually end up being the first place loser. Besides, It's not like they haven't had risk variants already. Castle? LotR? 2010?

    Dungeons of Dread Preview 4

This seems very odd to me. Why exactly would a fire elemental be hurt by a fireball no matter how big a blast you can make? Maybe it's too 'videogamey' but I'd expect such a hairbrained plan to actually heal it.

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

Actually, a little messing around has shown that that my 6 triangles idea earlier has some real potential. Just define the distance between any two vertexes (including the center of a hex) as 2.5 feet and the math works out rather cleanly for any measurement task. It allows for much more...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

That's probably the best solution for a square grid, especially if terrain modifiers like slope or ice are priced as +X to the cost. I still think I'm going to convert to hexes with facing and half-hex rules, though... or maybe go for the gusto with "any six mutually adjacent equilateral...

    Undead taxonomy

I can definately see a vampire as a creature with body and soul but no animus, hence the need to sustain itself artificially by borrowing some from it's victims and the obsessive need to seek out ways to prompt memories of past emotions, the closest it can come to feeling anything. A ghost as...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

Ainatan - Wouldn't the fighter actually need to be one diagonal step closer to the monster to keep the scale consistent? In both cases it's then possible for him to reach the mage in just 7 steps if you aim for the nearest point. I think you're absolutely correct otherwise. Getting rid...
