The second best IMO... ;) Try out Hârn and if that does not work, try to get a copy of The Medieval Handbook for Ars Magica 3rd edition, or Ordo Nobililis for Ars Magica 4th edition. That should do the trick.

I do it like this with full maps and all...

Hârn and Kalamar is my bet on the table. The former is perhaps too dry and down to earth, but the latter is well developed in its own right and has the correct fantasy feel. if you are into D&D, there is nothing as good as Kalamar.

Hmm... My players do their background in junction with me. That way you will have more plausible characters to the game you are planning/are running.

Yes I would and I do. I mean after all it is a game, and like with a movie I do not get affected. My players have portrait all kinds of characters over the years, some even more nasty than this. They are normal people with wives and kids so like many actors on screen playing the worst swines...

The Invasion of Arun'Kid by Kenzer & Co should fit the bill IMO. :)
