That's not a real-life experienced archer. This is a demigod in real life. +4 prof doesn't happen until level 9. A real life experienced archer should be judged as a level 1 dnd character.
Why exactly have we decided this should happen within short range. Let's say someone's at what I would consider a fair range of 30 feet. Why do they need to hit 40% of the time? How does that make sense, mechanically? No one would ever use ranged weapons primarily under this rule. This idea is a...
When I say they are unusable, I mean the guidance provided by the 5e DMG is terrible. 6 combats a day with 2 short rests? No one is doing that unless they are actively in a dungeon, and not being careful. That's not a reasonable number of combat encounters per day. Fighter also isn't one of the...
I agree, but this system needs to be codified. And I think a tag system codifies this in a way that doesn't involve listing 54 weapons in a table. 5e has generally done a trash job with this. Honestly what you have above is pretty close to what I'd like to see as the effective result of...
Sure, but an entire type of combat shouldn't rely on them to fix a problem that is much more easily fixed and solutions of which can come with much less "feels bad".
I suppose I'm being obtuse, the far more important point is that 5e isn't built well for stacking a bunch of modifiers on rolls. Anything that hopes to solve this problem in 5e shouldn't have the solution "play 3.5". Modifiers in 5e are rare and important. There are very few things that modify...
It's more about the need for calculating exact range. Are you within 60 feet is a question I can immediately answer as a GM. Exactly how many feet away are you is a much weirder question to be constantly keeping track of. One's binary, the other is highly variable, and changes every round.
I think there's kind of two ways we can go about changing this. Either accept that 5e has made weapon choice basically irrelevant, and remove the rest of the miniscule distinctions by eliminating the simple/martial distinction. We could then basically just have a 13th age system where there are...
I think this effect could be a lot more simple. Simply moving Indomitable to a lower level and making it an auto success per short rest rather than advantage nicely mimics this effect I think.
This is really obnoxious for theater of the mind combat. If we actually want something similar, halve the distance of close range on most ranged weapons.
Oh I just mean that by native 5e it doesn't stack and I think it should, and the 2d8 2d12 system makes stacking even more weird to figure out because I don't have d14s.
