I guess it depends if you are primarily a player or a GM. As the main GM for my group, I find the Bestiary and the GM Guide are great resources. I am eager to pick up the APG, but it is not a necessity for me now. If I was primarily a player, I would pick up the APG first.

Have you read the Core Rulebook? It explains all the things you are asking about using examples and tactical maps to help you visualize what is happening. I would suggest finding a local game and try playing before GMing. Do you have a FLGS where you can play?

To the OP: Are you the player of said character or the GM? It sounds like the PC wants the best of both worlds. Was turning into at Medusa-like creature a choice or a side-effect/punishment? I can't imagine she could use one gaze ability without triggering the other. It could be a perfect...

Can someone give a brief description of the alternate spell-less ranger? I don't care for casting rangers but most alternates just seem to swap them out for spell-like abilities. I would rather see feats, skills, special attacks/defenses.

I totally agree with you there. Oozes and creatures without structured anatomy should be immune to crits and sneak attack damage. I guess this just stresses the importance of balancing encounters and using a variety of opponents. Immunity to sneak attack is okay as long as GMs don't overly rely...
