Well an very easy way to do it is with the Soul Forge feat from Rokugan. It allows a character to bond a piece of equipment or item to himself like the ancestral daisho are. It has a few pre requisites though.

The rule is as follows from ELH: +2 levels for Aristocrats, Adepts +3 Levels for PC classed characters. +5 for ones w/PrCs. I use +2 for a Cohort w/PrC levels as well.

Compare that to sacrificing 3 overall levels to get... the same things except the hindrances of being large and the hd increase (or 2 of them anyways) Only after 20 levels would that be worth it. (Because the bonus spells would be 1-8th level spells, which could offset losses to say Archmage)
