Judging by the number of errors in the Player's Handbook, I think this is a good move.

Bards were the best characters in the game. Basically epic in scope and power. I remember them having D6 hp all the way through 23rd level though, I will have to check my old copy.

The only problem with this is that it's still no better than a short rest where you decide to use all your HD at once. And at 1st level it's almost no help at all, since you start with a much larger HP pool than your HD can catch up with. One quick fix would be to change it to HD plus CON. So...

You should try The Caves of Shadow, it is an introduction to 3.0 and pretty basic, but it should introduce the product in an easy to digest manner

I like the dice slots and slot variant(d8's) in the back of the old First edition DM's Guide. There are a few others in there too, I think In-Between is one of them.

I played it for about 6 weeks and it got boring fast. The ship combat was better than the land stuff, but there wasn't enough variety and a lot of glitches. I would suggest trying it for a month, and see if you can deal with it.
