[OT] We need your thoughts....

Hello again everyone.

I just wanted to thank you all for your kind words about Monty. He is truly a wonderful puppy. This is why it deeply saddens me to have to say what I'm about to say.

Today we took Monty for his first vet check up. He had a bit of a cough, and we decided to take him to the vets a bit sooner than we had planned. Well, what I thought was a bad case of kennel cough turned out to be a case of pneumonia. The vet called it "stress induced pneumonia", which I'm told is a common but serious illness in puppies who've moved to a new home.
They took some X-rays and Monty's lungs are filling with fluid. Both MojoGM (Chris) and I are hoping for the best and not giving up hope that he will pull through.

We're told he needs constant supervision, and us to be home to make certain he eats and drinks and doesn't stop breathing.
The next few days are going to be crucial. If you can spare a few seconds every day to just think good thoughts for him, or maybe if we all collectively cast a healing spell on spell on him at once :) I know the little guy would really , really appreciate it. And so would I.

Thanks everyone.

Sheri, Chris & Monty

Oh, dear. :(

We wish you the best of luck; I hope the little guy pulls through. You'll be in our thoughts.

Did you get him from a breeder or a pet store? I have strong opinions about pet stores (and the puppy mills that they get their pets from) that would probably make me close this thread if I decided to express them. Oof.

In any event, please keep us posted, and we'll be pulling for you!

Thanks. He was purchased from a breeder.

GOOD NEWS! Today Monty ate quite a bit and played a little and even went for a walk. He seems a lot better than he was yesterday and I think the antibiotic is working. My hopes are a bit higher today than they were yesterday when he was not eating, drinking or playing.

I actually worked in a good pet store for several years and the puppies there were among the healthiest, most well bred dogs I had ever seen. Unfortunately, this pet store ran out of money in the early 90's because they only bought good dogs, and we had a vet who did check ups once a week on all the puppies. It wasn't a chain and the owner was an older gentleman who just loved dogs.

I have no problem with GOOD pet stores, but the many bad ones give them all bad names. This isn't the venue for that discussion, though :) Breeders on the other hand...I just wish all the bad people, be they puppy mill supporting pet stores, or just idiotic people who think breeding dogs with make them rich, would just THINK about what they are doing...

This illness, however, is something that probably could not have been prevented and it isn't anyone's fault. Some puppies just don't handle change in their lives well...

>sigh<

But the signs are looking good. He made it through the first night on the medicine and that is the most important thing. We will keep you posted.

Oh, dear. Here I was all psyched up about posting pictures of my beloved dog, when I read about little Monty's illness. I hope he continues to improve. I can imagine what you're feeling right now, because if Sprocket got sick, my husband and I would both be frantic.

So, here are a few pics of our American Brittany, Sprocket. We got her through www.americanbrittanyrescue.org, which does wonderful work saving these loving, smart, beautiful dogs. Sprocket's pervious owner shot her, starved her, beat her, burned her and bred her before she was one year old. She's now about 3 1/2. She is still terrified of pickup trucks, and men who wear cowboy hats. But after many sessions of obedience classes, she's generally the happy and enthusiastic little spotty-dog she was meant to be.

How do other people post multiple pics in one post? Ah, well. Here's the other one.

That's terrible. People make me so angry. I don't understand how anyone could harm a helpless little dog. I hope the previous owner gets brought up on animal cruelty charges. I had a ferret once was beaten and starved and stepped on by his previous owners. They ended up getting fines and jail time. As they deserve.

She's beautiful. All the dogs people have posted here are. And all these stories just make me look more and more forward to spending Monty's life with him, and watching him grow and learn.

:)
