Here is a 10-minute rough of my map, still working on a real version. This will most likely change much b-4 I am finished with the city.

The elemental city mentioned above would be the City of Glass, (located on the elemental plane of Water) if my memory serves. Also, if you want some more ideas, you might want to pick up Green Ronin's Book of Fiends - you'll find some interesting ideas therein...

I like the map. Your wards are intelligently placed: merchants by docks, crafts by merchants. It looks very solid to me.

Who gets to live in the noble's ward? Anyone who can buy in? I see a major plot involving new money, as rowdy adventurers are causing waves in a stately old neighborhood....

I like the general idea and layout :)

Deathward. New name: Bonegate.

The Stonewarrens. New name: Stoneheart. Or some dwarven name. Keep them on the coast, and have the area also go down to a series of sea caves and underwater cavern areas for the various creatures like sahuagin.

Keep the tree-city; cool idea. Make it a tremendous tree, so big it has shops carved into the outer bark. Like, 150' feet around and about a thousand feet in the air, with these huge offshoots like a baobab (sp?) tree; those huge things in Africa that drop extra trucks around their perimeter.

A fountain that's a gate to the elemental plane of water. The water from it is always clear and pure. People come to it every morning to fill up the day's washwater and drinking water. Maybe it acts as a cure minor wounds as well.

There are a couple ideas I'm going to have to steal from this thread.

Btw: What PS book had the City of Glass in it? I'm drawing a blank, and dont really feel like going through all of my old books (especially since I have to unpack all of them from the closet).

I tried to place the "wards" as I would have in a traditional city, and the "warrens" are newer areas that were not in the original city plans, thus the different naming convention.

As far as the nobles ward, I see it as rich people in general, not necessarily true "nobles". The reason being is the very nature of the city as it is not a part of any true kingdom, but is a kind of kingdom all to its own.

Exactly my plan as far as the underwater caves are concearned. As far as Stoneheart, the name is kinda common, but on the track that I am looking at.

Exactly, with additional trees, catwalks, etc... gonna be hell to map :)

Cool idea, definitely to be considered!

It was in the Guide to the Elemental Planes, but there was by no means enough detail - there could be an entire book JUST on that one city... I think there are some old 2e (or maybe 1e) releases that deal with it, in a tangiental sort of way....

HTH,
