Real life spider for D20 campaign

For anyone looking for new spiders for their campaign go ahead and add this one to the mix. Don't actually know if this real or not, but being arachnophobic and opening this in my mail box sure made my skin crawl.

[qoute]They run 10 mph, jump three feet, are a nocturnal spider, so only come out at night unless they are in shade. When they bite you, you are injected with Novocain so you go numb instantly. You don't even know you are bitten when you are sleeping, so you wake up with part of your leg or arm missing because it has been gnawing on it all night long.

If you are walking around and you bump something that is casting a shadow over it, and the sun makes contact with it, you better run. It will instantly run for your shadow, and scream the whole time it is chasing you.

Soldiers say these spiders aren't bad cooked over a campfire with BBQ sauce.[/quote]

Having actually been over in this area of the world for a brief period of time I can say that camel spiders are real and nasty looking but are not nearly as baaad as they are made out to be.

First they are not really spiders but a half spider/ half scorpion type creature, which explains the 10 legs. They are the fastest spider known to man and are aggressive if cornered, though the "following" is a result of the buggers trying to stay out of the relentless sun.

They can jump and have been known to crawl up next to people while sleeping. Bites occur when an unsuspecting individual rolls over on one or puts hand near one where they do not belong.

I have seen a death match between one of these and a lizard. The lizard lost after the camel spider decapitated it with its jaws and sucked the bodily fluids out of it.

They like to eat mice which keep them near military camps and civilization in general.

Also on an interesting note to drive this even more off topic, in Spiderman the Camel Spider is one of the spiders that is genetically mixed into the super spider that notes Parker.

These things have been a practical joke, usually played on research assistants by archaeologists, since before the first gulf war... The usual venue is as a campfire tale, just before telling the greenhorns "Well, good night... Sleep well!"

"Camel Spiders" are not spiders, have NO venom, whatsoever, do not anaesthetize you in your sleep, and don't attack camels (let alone people). They are paper tigers, like the djinn and janni. Great for scaring the greenhorns and tenderfeet out of a good night's sleep... While there is a species of arachnida known by this name, they have none of the capabilities ascribed to them by the evil tricksters seeking to dupe the tenderfeet out of a good night's sleep!
