This is just screaming to me: "Make a D&D Adventure based of me!" As some of you might recognize, this is Frazetta's painting for A Princess of Mars for an edition that came out while I was too young to read it. :) sorry the picture is so small that you can't see any fine details. Fortunately, you can click on it and get the full picture. :)

So, my brain is going to cook something for this picture. It might not be set on Barsoom, but I hope the adventure based off of it would be exciting!

Edit: The painting below is inappropriate to open while those with strong Victorian sensibilities are around.

Frazetta still stands head and shoulders above nearly all other fantasy artists. He's really, really good.

My desktop is a rotating selection of over a hundred Frazetta paintings and sketches I've found online. Changes every five minutes, and let me tell you, sure helps to generate inspiration when I'm working on my next game session...

Well, duh it's inspirational, it's Frank Freakin' Frazetta.

That's the edition I first read, actually. It also has a lot of Frazetta ink drawings in the interior. It totally rocks, and I'd like to find a copy of that edition.

Yep! You have no debate with me on that part.

Ran a campaign recently with a large jungle setting that I imagined using lots of influence from Frazetta paintings and Howard's Conan books: towering ruins, giant prehistoric animals, savage blade combat, strange hallucinogenic plants, seductresses, madness, deadly magic. All that great stuff. Frazetta's work is incredibly inspirational. I always thought he depicted Conan accurately: not a blond Austrian in some pose, but rather the dark-haired Cimerrian always in the midst of the most savage trouble.

As barsoomcore noted above, Frazetta's the king. There are so many great fantasy illustrators, but Frazetta's on a whole other level. Go write a new adventure! Giant snakes! Strange wizards! Dark waters! Lusty warrior women! Lost treasure! Treacherous thieves! Illicit caravans!

Edit: Whoops! I forgot. If you need any inspiration for great adventures with something of a Frazetta feel, may I suggest checking out barsoomcore's story hour (Barsoom Tales, linked in the signature of his post above) in the Story Hour Forum (he's got several in there, and they're all good, but Barsoom Tales is a great place to start). His world isn't exactly the Barsoom from the novels (though there are similarities), but it's awesome, and his writing is great. There's more than one or two things with a hint of Frazetta in them. Or, anther way to think about the story is, its easy to imagine Frazetta illustrations accompanying his story hour.

One thing I really like about Frazetta is his woman (and it's pretty much always the same woman in all his paintings -- he really liked that one model, whoever she is). She's not a freakish starvation queen with an inflatable chest. She's a little heavy through the hips. She's got a bit of a belly. She's round. She looks strong. When you see the massively ripped guys staring at her, you believe that they suddenly feel kind of weak. She looks like she can command banths and compel great warriors to her will.

Hard to imagine any modern actress doing her justice. Modern entertainment seems to prefer girl-children to women, and actresses who aren't frighteningly skinny just don't seem to be able to get ahead. It's too bad, cause I think Frazetta's image is healthier and sexier and stronger.

Frazetta's image looks like she can run rings around some of the Superheroic Women in comics now a days. She is certainly healthier and stronger. Not to mention that all Frazetta's paintings that employed that one model has her running the gamut of emotions.

I'm trying to write one based on the novel "She." Then all of the sudden, this burst in my brain. It's almost like that one is saying, "You haven't read anything with Alan Quartermain as the star, write about me! You know me better."

If Frazetta ever did a drawing of She, this fits the bill. Once again, you shouldn't open this while at work, some Victorian prude might get flustered.
