Photoshop mapping...

Here's one I did completely in Illustrator. I tried to use CC (came with Core Rules 2.0) but I couldn't get a decent grasp on the damn thing. Eventually, I just gave up and had to make my own, though it was a big influence. The original image is about 25 inches on the narrow end so that I could print it on a plotter. It printed out quite nice too, but my god did it take a while to print. :D

Do you guys spend as much time on other parts of your campaigns as you do on these maps? They're beautiful, but they must be time consuming to make!

I think that map of Vauncalla took me about an hour, maybe two. The part that took the longest was creating the initial components (I had to draw them by hand using CC and some other maps I had seen as a baseline), such as the buildings, water, trees, landscape, etc. The rest just kinda fell into place.

The local maps usually take 6-12 hours to make but those that take 12 hours are always those I sell to Columbia Games for publication. The interior maps take anything from 1-4 hours depending on what detail I add. You need to know that the maps I create are for the HârnWorld RPG and they need to be realistic with the right placed sands, streams, fields and so on. More medieval than fantasy so to speak. And yes I do add as much detail to my campaigns as I do my maps. Have a look here at this campaign.

kreynolds, would you consider posting the ai files for your city maps? As you know, setting up the initial elements are really time consuming.

I'm pretty new to mapping with Photoshop, but here's one of my first attempts:
