Photoshop mapping...

I build maps in Macromedia Freehand (it's a vector drawing app.).
Basically it started out slow but as I built objects like beds, tables, doors, stairs, etc. I added them to a library of images that I could take whatever I needed from. Freehand uses layers so it's really easy to manipulate a DM map and a players map.

Freehand is also Photoshop and Illustrator compatible! I have both of those anyway. ;)

I would love to try to build a map image library. When I get a chance I'll post a link to one of my maps.

Hmmm... No one has tried 'Dungeon Crafter'?

It's a free download and you can make maps like this pretty fast, using different tile sets you can to all kinds of stuff.

You can then save your map and bring it into photoshop or some other program to edit further.

At least that's what I think I remeber you could do with it (I haven't used it in a long time, I tend to just freehand draw on paper)

funny that you mentioned FreeHand TalonComics, that's my specialty, lol. I do alot of logos and posters where I work and most of them I do in either FreeHand or Photoshop, and illustrator to sometimes get some of the new nifty features. But mostly FreeHand :). I do all my maps in photoshop though, they just have a better "feel", harder to work with yes, but I think they look better. I've done alot of maps in FreeHand, but mine end up looking too sterile and clean. I preffer the softer edge of Photoshop for maps.

I'm a photoshop man myself, but if you need something high-class and free, there's a nice windows port of the Gimp available. My dream is to be able to take the level editor from a first-person shooter, map out my dungeon in 3d, and fly through it in preview mode as the players explore it. :)

Well I work with both to tell you the truth. I have been mapping for quite some time now and although Photoshop do have a more soft and eye-candid feel some of the Freehand maps are really good. Prefer B&W/Freehand myself when it comes to Floorplans and Color/Photoshop when it comes to Local Maps.

Have a look at these maps if you like such things:

Note that some of these maps/art are copyrighted and TM by Columbia Games Inc. and the rest is by yours truly.

Thanks. You could get a hold of a lot more on my website. Regarding your map(s) the dungeon was very nice. However I am biased towards B&W when it comes to floorplans but yours was excellent for a floorplan PS map.

Thanks... i'll have to upload all the ones i've done since then. Just need to take some time tonight and post them :).

I use color since I have access to some pretty nice color printers , luckily.
