Behir Art work looks like a rocking horse...

The Laughing One
I have to DM in like two and a half hours and while i'm preparing the session i came across the Behir artwork in the MM 3.5, my first reaction (after not having seen it in a while) "it looks like a bloody rocking horse". How is that going to scare my players? I'm pretty sure the barbarian wants to sit on the damned thing and play with it...

Am i the only one that finds the artwork a little bit disapointing? Has anyone seen better artwork for the Behir? If so where?

I'm lucky the miniature is a damned lot more impressive then the MM artwork.

In the previous edition of D&D the behir was already ridiculous. Just the name sounds silly, to begin with, and the blue color doesn't improve that... My suggestion is to have this monster in a misty, dark place, and to describe it verbally. Then when having to fight, just show the mini. Myself, I never use Behir (but there are so many monster I don't use... ).

In times like this you can always resort to either Counter Collection Gold or Counter Collection Digital. I hear good things about that artist!

:D

The recent July issue of Dragon Magazine, issue 333, has an Ecology of the Behir article, with art by Peter Bergting. There's a cool picture of a behir swallowing an adventurer while crushing two other adventurers.

Great cover!

Bummer the new behir didn't retain those cool ram's horns.
They add a nifty element of craziness--like the behir is saying, "...and if my bite and electricity doesn't kill ya, dang it, I'll BANG you with my HEAD!!"

S4 is my first thought on the Behir as well. But I think I like the BW drawing in the 1st Ed MMII better. :)

The Behir is one of my favorite D&D Minis. I suppose that that's slightly because you can fit humanoid minis in its hands and make growling and roaring sounds as it devours the hapless adventurers... :o
