You obviously have not read Gene Wolfe's "Urth of the New Sun" books, which feature just such a sword. :)
However, it was used for executions, where the added momentum would be helpful. It was not a combat sidearm.

Now that I could see, but in practical combat terms, it's pretty lame. Kind of like mounting a guillotine blade on a haft. Hey wait a minute!?!?! Hm...guillotine blade!

Can someone post a picture? I've studied a lot of ancient weaponry, but I don't have that book anymore.

Thank you, mspaint!

I've seen something like it before, but I can't place where I've seen it. I did find this picture, which is similar. These spears were used by the Tutsi. From what I gather from looking at the weapon, its utility seems to be in stabbing opponents in the back as a polearm in more of a massed battle situation. I'll see if I can find anything else...

I'm pretty sure it's made up, like the tumbling bolt or the mercurial swords. As others have mentioned, a study in weapons of different cultures hasn't lead me to believe such a weapon ever existed, and people have come up with some pretty stupid weapons, historically speaking.
