super secret symbols and the cult of rpg(concerns us all)

i appreciate everyones responses, i am working on 2-3 options, when i get pricing it will be much easier to make decisions.

i think it should be like ocg though, do i have to copyright it or something to declare it free? i mean do you have to license something to keep it free? can someone else come along and copyright or trademark it after it emans something to a group?

eh, anyway, pladin and wife- show us a dicebag with I R P G :) write it on a wall (that you are allowed to write it on):p get a shirt made, let's spread the word and we can all say we were here when it started! it will be (in a tiny way ) like being able to say you were there when eric met the gazebo or monte giggled first over the orc and his now famous pastry! :D

I R P G put it on dice shaped stickers, get it shaved on the back of your head, tattoo it on your bicep, spread the word.

I've always used the classic "Thieves' Guild" sign from Quest for Glory:

Take your right hand and spread your fingers out. Put your thumb to your nose and wiggle your four remaining fingers while rubbing or patting your stomach with your left hand.

Harr.

Here's a little something I whipped up for the grittier feel.

Innuendo

What about following the lines of the classic Rogue doublespeak? Innuendo is a great way to meet people who also game and would understand what you're talking about. This way you don't find people who have acquired whatever item represents RPG because it's seen as a novelty or underground item. [See ObeyGiant]

OTOH, I can respect something that doesn't constantly need to be said aloud in large groups, maybe a keychain or something. Something instantly recognizable, but not known to anyone but a hard core gamer. ( It's my experience that polyhedral dice, especially anything bigger than a D8 is still widely recognized and associated with D&D by the public-at-large).

I guess I'm pushing for something subtle, like jewelry or a particular phrase.

What do you guys think?

(1st post!)

If this comes out as IRPG on a d20, you'll have lost at least one advertisement for the RPG community. I have a news flash for you:

d20 IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE RPG COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE!

depends on what "at cost" is. If it's too high, maybe we should look into some variety of bumper sticker for those of us too young to legally get a job, and too old to get an allowance. :D

What's wrong with kids today? "Too young to legally get a job, and too old to get an allowance"? Show some initiative son. When I was your age I still got an allowance.

Returning to the original topic: I'm not a big fan of logos. Something like a secret handshake or other hand signal would be better. Maybe even a secret breakdance to show that RPGs have kept up with the changing times (+ or - 25 years). It would have to be fairly complex to keep the non-RPGers from copying it easily. I can start choreographing tomorrow if everyone likes the idea.

Hey dave_o, swiping the old Role Playing Game Association logo is cheating. :D

And as for a secret handshake, I think when we meet we should just shake each others dice-bag.

If you know what I mean (and I think Hong does). :D :D :D
