Dragon Age?

I was at my local Books-a-million and found this book.

Not crunch, I know, but I hadn't heard of it and it's bound to have something more about the setting.

Gore and violence do not a "mature product" make--but neither do they automatically indicate immaturity. Some of the best movies and books have lots of gore and violence; they just don't rely on it.

Me? I'm always interested in seeing what a new "gritty" fantasy system looks like. I've never yet found one that I'd want to play over D&D's more heroic fantasy, but I'm still hoping to find one that appeals to me. And while Chris and I don't agree on 4E, I very much like his general sense of the fantasy aesthetic. I'll be checking this one out.

An obsession with blood and :):):):):):):) isn't "maturity," it's about as immature as it gets. Don't let the juvenile gaming industry tell you otherwise.

This enourmous pet peeve is brought to you by my inability to get to sleep ;p

Ah, the young guys with too much time on their hands...

Regards,
Ruemere

PS. I am not much into Dragon Age, particularly because I believe it will not unique enough to justify purchasing it. However, since it's the Green Ronin guys who work on it, I am keenly following news on its development hoping to be proven wrong.

Um. . . sorry, then? :p Not sure why you'd be disappointed that a RPG is coming out in the most awesome of game formats evar: teh sexeh box set. . .

*sigh* Oh well. Didn't *sniffle* mean to upset you. . .

Nothing wrong with a box set, if it is a matching set. (bad pun -- had too)

Guess I am book kind of gamer, box set says extra and loose pages and softback manuals.

Box set says it can go places books cannot. In terms of vendors. How many folks were introduced to the hobby by the Red Box waaay back when (not me, I predate Red Box by a few years, but still)? It was in toy stores, bookstores, comic book stores and game stores (not rpgs, but puzzle, boardgame like stores) and even department stores.

Having a game like this in Target, Walmart.... can be a nice trickle of newly targeted players. It serves the impulse buy market...not the establishing gamer market. Although, it can serve that too. I would consider picking it up after I read a review or two.

Seeing as how it's by the head writer of the video game (Gaider), I'd imagine it would. :)

There's also a long thread on the DA boards where he talks about it, and goes into more detail on the setting.

and yet they are marketing it as "mature product", will it have a rating attached for all those new gamers they are hoping to pull in (from Target and Walmart)?

Pop a NASCAR sticker on it and you will sell more copies and maybe have more new gamers! :erm:

I know very little about the game but I did hear from a PC Gaming podcast that although many of the settings elements are traditional (elves, dwarves and such) each is different enough to make it memorable. For example Dwarves are supposed to be Machiavellian in the extreme. One person described them thus: dwarves in Dragon Age make the great houses in Dune (the novel) look like novices.

The setting is coming from the same people who brought you Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate and KotOR. I'm betting they have more up their sleeve than vanilla fantasy so I'll definitely check it out when it's released.

My only reservation is the existence of only 3 classes. It sound simplistic unless they do something like True 20. If this is a product targeted to newbies I'll probably give it a pass and stick with the video game.

I think the three classes harken back to Warhammer FRP.v1, you had a path then a career, there were three paths and tons of careers. This could be much the same but based on your selection of skills and powers, your warrior could be completely different from the other warrior in your party, it is very flexable.

guess we will see more later.
