[4e] The Wolfcrown, Chapter 1

[sblock=OOC to DF] No my attack did not include my +2 from the flanking mentioned DF... with the map not updated I could not tell if I was flanking or not... I did however include the divine fortune in there yes....... so add +2 to my roll for the flanking to give me a total of 15 to hit AC[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]To Rathan: Cool. That makes sense, although the attack is still a miss. To everyone: Let's just rule that I'll deal with flanking/combat advantage (since the positions won't be updated every single turn) but I'll leave everything else up to you. Thus, you'll do your normal STAT+ENHANCEMENT+PROFICIENCY+OTHER BONUSES, but if the enemy is dazed or flanked or something, don't add the combat advantage to your attack roll. I'll do that myself. Sound ok?[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]It's been 2 days, still waiting for Thorn's actions. If Shayuri hasn't posted by tomorrow, I'll end the round and assume Thorn's delaying her actions.[/sblock]

(OOC - Sorry...busy week. As the huge row of posts I made today shows, I'm getting caught up now. Thanks for the clarification. For some reason I thought the 'stairs' showed the center of a spiral staircase, and we were coming out of the stairwell...hee...)

Thorn scans the enemy formation and draws on the strange power lying dormant within her. Her eyes swim an inky black, and she feels a chill settle over her as she reaches out with her slim, short sword and makes a slash with it...even though there's no one nearby.

What's harder to see is that her shadow has stretched out towards one of the guards, and as she makes her attack, so does it! Unfortunately, the angle involved is a little weird, and Thorn misjudges her swing. Even so, with a quick reverse she manages to at least touch the guard with her shadow, even if it's not with an attack.

A little bit of the shadow seems to seep over the guard as that happens, making him look a little dimmer than he did a moment ago.

(Attack guard H6 with Inescapable Blade! Then roll a natural 1! :) Ah well, still putting an Assassin's Shroud on him.)

The soldiers fan out. Two of the guards break away from the main fray and hurry around the narrow stairway to attack Thorn. One of them invites an opportunity for Baern to strike him as he runs away.

[sblock=Opportunity Attack]When Baern's actions are posted, he may make an opportunity attack against Guard 2.[/sblock]

The other two guards set up a flanking maneuver against Baern while the slingers load their weapons and take aim on Torath.

The two guards near Baern simultaneously swing their heavy maces at him. Baern feels his skull crack, and he wobbles and begins to feel his knees trembling. Could this be the end of such a promising adventure?

[sblock=Damage]Baern takes 18 damage, which knocks him below 0 HP. Baern may still take his usual actions this round, and he will fall unconscious at the end of the round unless healed.[/sblock]

Thorn is attacked with her back the stairwell. The guard she cursed with her shadow seems intent on escaping the chill in his spine. He clubs Thorn in the stomach, and she doubles over in pain. The other guard crashes his mace into the back of her head, and a spray of blackened blood erupts from her mouth.

[sblock=Damage]Thorn takes 14 damage and has become bloodied.[/sblock]

The slingers in the back of the room take careful aim against Torath, the so-called "Knight in Half-Polished Armor." The one on the left lets his missile fly first, and it sails through the air. It collides directly with Torath's unarmored face and causes him to reel for a moment. The second slinger looses his rock, and it cracks with a heavy thud into Torath's chestplate. Torath can feel the blood soaking out of his breast and dripping into his armor.

[sblock=Damage]Torath takes 20 damage and is now bloodied.[/sblock]

[sblock=Enemy Actions]Guards 1 and 4 don't move.
Guard 3 walks to I9 in front of Thorn.
Guard 2 walks around to Thorn's side at J10.
Guard 2's movement invites an opportunity attack from Baern.

The slingers reload their weapons.

Guards 1 and 4 attack Baern with combat advantage (flanking).
Both succeed. Baern takes two hits of 9 damage each, for 18 total damage.

Guards 2 and 3 attack Thorn.
Both succeed. Thorn takes two hits: 9 damage from Guard 2, 5 damage from Guard 3, for 14 total damage.

Slingers 1 and 2 attack Torath with ranged basic attacks.
Both succeed. One is a critical hit. Torath takes two hits of 10 damage each, for 20 total damage.

Doren sees Baern in a bad way already so early in the flight from the cells... he sighed softly noting this was NOT going well so far and regretted coming this way already... quickly he spouts off a quick prayer to Blackmoor filling Baern with healing energies before hefting his mace once more on the guard he attacked the round before....

"Blackmoor... our outlook seems grim here... please give us some aide so we can find the true justice in this mess and find the REAL person guilty in this endeavor!" the priest uttered as he healed and tried incapacitating the guard once more....

Thorn reels away from the two guards ganging up on her and for a moment it looks like she may fall. Then she looks up at the guards with a trail of dark blood leaking from the corner of her mouth and smiles grimly. The chill pall around the one guard intensifies, and the changeling dives at the floor where a flickering torch casts his shadow over the flagstones...and vanishes into that shadow!

She erupts out of the shadow of another guard, the one all but surrounded by the others, and quicker than a snake drives her sword at him. As she does, all the shadows of everyone around him rise up and seem to claw at him at the same time!

As she withdraws from the attack, her substance becomes inky and smoky...like a shadow itself.

(Put another Shroud on guard 3, then Shadow Step to I6 and use Shadow Storm on Guard 4! 21 to hit vs AC for 6 damage, plus 1 damage per person adjacent to him. At the beginning of the turn, that's 5 people (once Thorn teleports in), for a total of 11 damage. As a minor action, she then activates Shade Form, making her insubstantial...hopefully therefore not dying from counterattacks. :))
Roll Lookup

Baern takes a swipe at the back of the knee of the fleeing guard before things go black. But the stubborn dwarf refuses to fall, and begins to mutter a prayer as he blinks the stars away.

He takes a step to the side, and with his rod in his left hand, he slams it three times again the hammer in his right...and three times deafening clashes of thunder fill the room, followed by Baern's stern voice.

"By the grace of Blackmore, let us pass! No one need die here today!"

Thomas, Summoner Wizard

Muttering words of power, Thomas opens his hand...

The air ripples, as if from heat, and a soldier of flame strides through the ripples in the air near the slinger on the right. It lifts a shimmering axe above its head as it moves to attack.

Not pausing to see the fear in the guard's eyes, his chanting verse flows into another spell as a crackling column of lightning appears between the guards, filling the space vacated by Baern a moment before. Electric tendrils crack out at the guards.

The adrenaline of the moment carries Thomas forward...he shakes off the worst of the pain. Taking a breath from the incantations, he realizes that Squeal has moved and ducks back behind him for some cover.
