[4e] The Wolfcrown, Chapter 1

Torath Round 3

Stepping up to engage the bowman, Torath pulls forth his holysymbol. Pointing a finger at one of the two men Torath utter's a short prayer. "Smite the enemies of thy servant." A beams of golden light shots forth at the unexspecting guard.

"By Blackmore's mercy, leave while you can. Go now, and clear us the way!" Baern screams to the unarmed guard standing in front of him. He then raises his rod, and stares past his attacker instead of unto him, and chants.

Between the slingers, in the midst of the fire, Blackmore's radiant light shines. Up from the charred ground comes a swirling mass of radiant shards that envelops the slingers, leaving hundreds of tiny, oozing pinpricks.

Torath and Baern simultaneously blast the first slinger with radiant light, and he falls to the ground, unconscious. Baern's blast ricochets off and hits the second slinger, who howls in pain.

The first guard, whom Baern urges to retreat, seems to be the most stalwart of the remaining soldiers. He picks up his mace and responds to the dwarf's shouts. "If I turn my back on ye, how can I be assured ye won't stick a knife between me ribs? Or would ye leave me smolderin' on the ground like me compatriots over there?" He nods his head toward the unconscious body of the fourth guard, then mutters in his slurred speech. "As sure as my name is Corp'ral Bryan Hedge, I can't trust any of you accused men."

[sblock=ooc]Just waiting for Thorn, then we'll do Round 4. We're moving right along![/sblock]

Doren sighed softly listening to the guard.... then with hurried breaths from strain of combat he tries to speak....

"You have NO reason to trust us... nor do we you... it's a stalemate that's caused this melee... however if you think about it... How did we escape in the first place?!... its was COMPLETELY of Blackmoors will that we are here to find justice in the form of the REAL killer of your beloved king.. I IMPLORE you... let us do Blackmoors will and find the real killer... let us pass.. I will even tend to the wounded before I leave... I give you my word as a man of law... the priest uttered... he never wanted bloodshed.. he never wanted it to come to this... however he was willing to continue if need be in Blackmoors name...

[sblock=Diplomacy Check if Allowed Here]1d20+6=20 (Diplomacy)[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]I'll let Thorn act before we resolve that Diplomacy check, but I'll let Cpl. Hedge talk to people while we wait.[/sblock]

Corporal Hedge stares at Doren, his eyes betraying a glimmer of animalistic cunning. "And how do ye think my men and I'd be received if we let ye go? We've got families, most of us - I've got a wife and two daughters meself. I'd lose my job if I let ye go. You know that as well as I do. If I have to choose between yer lives and my daughters', that's an easy choice."

"I am sorry corporal," Torath says genuinely. "But we must go from here, the real killer may be on his way. Or at the very least agents of his to do away with us." The holy warrior pauses to think a moment. "It may not be safe here for you and your men either, who knows what such men would do."

As the palaver went on between the others and Guard 1...sorry, Corporal Hedge...Thorn's indistinct form sank into a shadow on the floor and appeared a few feet away from Guard 2. She gestured at the unfortunate guard to get his attention, then pulled her hood back just a little, so he could see her face. It was a terrible, dread visage she showed him though, a pale rotted white, with a corpse's grin and awful wounds that seemed to gape, discolored and suppurating beneath gaunt cheeks and dreadful red eyes.

And then shadows rose up around him, whispering, pointing, gathering as if to pounce. From the corners of his eyes he could see motion, but when he turned to look nothing was there. The glint of a knife coming at him, the voice of the bully that tormented him as a child...the smell of blood and decay...

Move: Shadow Step to L8.
Minor: Changeling Trick (Bluff 27 vs passive Insight, if I win I get Combat advantage until end of next turn).

(Note that the Nightmare Shades to hit is 13 if the Changeling Trick works. I didn't include the bonus from CA in the roll. Note too that this is nonlethal, just in case it puts him down. :))

Thorn's well-practiced psychic barrage drops the second guard to his knees. His eyes go blank, and with a thud, he tumbles onto his back.

Corporal Hedge holds his hand up, signaling his troops to cease the attack. He looks at his two upright soldiers, sees them both bloodied and wounded, and says to them,

"Men, we're fighting a losin' battle here. We're outnumbered. Stand down."

In the back of the chamber, the slinger nods, and the battle seems to be coming to a close. Hedge slings his mace onto his shoulder and sighs.

"We're at an impasse. You six are accused of murder. Now I don't know rightly whether you did kill the king or you didn't. That don't make a difference to me or to my superior officers. But I do believe that ye don't want to kill me, and I sure would rather have ye on my side than against me in a fight. Ye say that the assassins are coming here? I might be inclined to believe ye. Supposin' I did, what makes ye think ye could get away from the real killer? If they could kill Lord Hood, couldn't they kill ye just as easily?

Hedge's other soldier remains alert, still suspicious of these negotiations. Corporal Hedge waits for a moment, then looks quizzically at the group.

"How in the blazes did ye even get out of that cell?"

[sblock=Round 4 NPC Actions]They all delay their actions while Corporal Hedge negotiates.[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]Even though the fight is pretty much over, I'll still wait for a response from everybody before we move on.[/sblock]

True to his word as the fighting is ceased the FIRST thing Doren does and tend to the unconscious men downed by he and and comrades.... using his well versed skill in tending to the wounded to make the men as comfortable as possible.... hearing the guard leaders words he looked up from his bandaging and sighed...

"For the sake of not sounding like a pompass ass here but it does not matter how we got out.... only that by Blackmoors will did we do so.... you're men are going to be tended as it was not our intent to start a conflict but merely work out way out of here and find the assassin that killed the great king of your city... sadly... you are correct we walk into unknown and dangerous territory to find this man and risk being killed ourselves... however it's a risk in Blackmoors name of Justice I am willing to take... my suggestion to you.. if it's this mans plan to come here to kill us tonight in our cells you best triple your guard on this building tonight and expect his arrival... you may be lucky enough to catch him before we do... however for now we must hurry... the sooner we get out of here the sooner we can get to finding the person that set us up" the long winded priest uttered as he finished his bandaging.....

[sblock=OOC to DF]If you need me to actually roll the Healing Check let me know ok? Dorean would not leave until he's made sure each man has been tended to his or her wounds...[/sblock]

"Blessed Blackmore," Baern whispers to himself as the soldier speaks. He lowers is hammer and looks into the eyes of the others in turn when he is finished. He knows these negotiations are fragile, at best; he is smart enough to know to keep his gruff lips sealed when it comes such delicate matters, leaving the talking to those with more nimble tongues.
