[4e] The Wolfcrown, Chapter 1

Thorn grimaced as a detente was reached. Better that they knock all the guards out. The group was terribly naive; vulnerable.

"The assassin wouldn't be coming here for us unless they were either very confident of their stealth, or unless they had every appearance of being a legitimate authority," Thorn said, padding around to join the others.

"Either way, the number of guards here won't matter."

She turned her attention to Corporal Hedge. Time for him to earn his way.

"How many guards are between this place and the nearest way out to the street?"

Placing his sword back in it's scarrab Torath folds his arms over his chest. "I think we have no time to tell tales." he says grumbling. "If you let us pass I believe you will have nothing to fear from your superiors, just say we over powered you and escaped."

Torath believes that the Dragonborn that freed them will not let these men be punished. [/sblock]

Thomas, Summoner Wizard

"Everyone has a bit of the right idea here. If someone else is coming for us, the number of guards likely won't matter. Nor does it matter how we got out, but that we are out now."

"I agree that we should exit as quickly as possible. If we are to confront our hidden enemy then I'd rather not do it here, where we will need to worry about constrained spaces and hurting innocents."

The warforged lowers it weapons and looks at the rest of the group and the guards

"This one does not want to return to the cells", turning to the guard Squeal contines "Which way is the safest way out?"

Corporal Hedge watches Doren walking among the fallen soldiers, bandaging their wounds and murmuring blessings over them. When Thorn speaks, Hedge turns to look at her.

"If ye were to go up one more floor, there'd be another squad the size of mine. They're built mostly to serve as a backup unit - fat lot of good they did, since they never came down to help. Maybe they wandered off. If you go up the next floor after that, ye would be on the ground floor, and could probably jest walk out - unless ye wanted to see more of the castle."

Torath gruffly interrupts their conversation and urges Hedge to make up an excuse that his men were overpowered.

"Aye, I could tell my superiors that escaped by some divine force, then they somehow got their hands on full sets of armor and weapons, then they beat most of my men unconscious, and then healed us back up before taking off into the castle, possibly to go commit more murders like the one that they're on trial for. By now, I don't think it matters much what I tell 'em."

Thomas speaks a few rational sentences, and Hedge nods in agreement, then addresses the wizard.

"I'm pulling my squad out of the castle, simple as that. If the assassin is comin' here, then he could kill us all. But by Blackmoor's fist and Ayur's staff, if I find out that ye lied to me or that ye really are the killers, I'll pull together an army and bring it down on ye personally."

Hedge then turns to Squeal.

"The warforged has the right idea. We can go up to the next floor together, and I'll send the other squad away. I'll tell 'em I'm moving ye to a different jail for the night. They won't argue with me. Then I'll give ye a half-hour head start to get the hell out of here."

The Corporal finally adresses the entire group.

"Are we in agreement then?"

"No," Thorn said. "But it's an excellent idea."

Her clothes and armor shifted as the flesh under them changed. Her sleek, dangerous figure ballooned out into larger muscles and broad shoulders. Her face puffed up into the spitting image of Corporal Hedge.

"I'll do the honors, if ye don't mind," he said gruffly. "Not that I don't trust ye...but this way there's no last second second thoughts, aye?" He smirked and started undoing his belt. "Now if ye'd just be so kind as to hand over yer uniform..."

Hedge stares in disbelief at Thorn's version of him. He looks into his own blue eyes, then he scans his double thoroughly. He smirks.

"Am I really that handsome?"

After another moment, he shakes his head in disbelief, then hands over his armor, his jacket, his weapons, and his boots.

[sblock=Shayuri]Thorn has now acquired a "Cpl. Hedge Disguise," a mace, and two daggers.[/sblock]

"All right. I know better than to try to fight ye. Just go ahead, then, ye bastards. But trust me. If ye stray even one hair away from the word of the law, I'll know. Then I'll come down on ye like a hammer. Now get out. We'll come up in half an hour."

"Relax... no one will be straying much from the law on my watch" the priest uttered softly to Cpl. Hedge... as he turned to watch Thorn in amazement... "wow... now I know how some here in town escape capture...." the law cleric uttered softly almost to himself before gathering his whits about him and prepared for the next floor....

Baern takes in the scene with quiet amazement before finally shaking himself from his silent reverie. "Well then, I s'pose you'll be leadin' the way?" he says with a polite nod, and steps aside.
