D&D 5E Death strike is grisly

So at high levels, the damage from a death strike would be automatically (2dW + 20d6) x 2, averaging about 150 HP!

A bit more than that, actually - add in Dex 20 and you get ~170 HP

An average 20th level barbarian with a Con of 20 has 245 HP so this would be modestly inconveniencing. It will kill many wizards and rogues outright, taking them below negative max HP, of course.

But is it not the case that in 5E, things generally do not stack? So two doubling effects still only give one doubling of the dice? This will still give the assassin 2W + 20d6 or ~85 HP damage (assuming Dex 20 and a finesse weapon), enough to down but not outright kill any wizard without a Con bonus.

Because the Critical Hit Doubles the Dice rolled, and Assassinate Doubles the Total Damage Done, I believe they stack.

Considering that this is still a huge step down from 3.5's "you just kill it," and the fact that it takes until 17th level, I'd say this is pretty fair.

I also agree that when your entire class is mostly loaded into one type of attack, that's a lot less interesting to play as a PC.

Minor aside: a 20th level barbarian has a 24 Con.

LOL!!!!

All I can think of is the deadliest assassin of the Hyborian Age trying to off a drunken Conan in a tavern. He plunges his dagger in his back with what should be enough to slay any mortal man only to have Conan turn around with his wild trademark "I am about to go berserk and break things" expression. Poor assassin.

Death Strike can be grizzly indeed!

Surprising enemies may prove harder that it seem though, because if the enemy notice a threat, its not surprised. While its far easier to achieve when travelling alone, you'll find it harder to pull off with a party, especially if one of them isn't particularly stealthy or lucky.

A 17th level assassin deserves to be deadly. Reminds me when in Ultimates Hawkeye killed a bunch of dudes with his fingernails.
