D&D 5E Mystic vs. Favoured Soul for 5e Divine Sorceror

Legend
Okay I think the 2e Mystic class from Faiths and Avatars (which became a Prestige Class in 3e) makes more sense as a Sorceror Origin then Favoured Soul.

Mystic has better flavour, would be easier to add to the sorceror, especially if you don't want to fight in melee, is older then the Favoured Soul.

The 5e Favoured Soul is akward, you get an extra attack, bit your weapons usually suck depending on race, your wings aren't special, the Dragon Sorceror gets them too.

The Mystic has a long, honoured Tradition, especially in FR.

Both are Charisma casters, but the Mystics spell selection was much more simular to the Sorcerors then the Favoured soul, the Mystic was less melee focused and both the Sorceror and Mystic at times got familiars.

Instead of getting wings, the Mystic could use charm spells, make potions, and simular magic tricks.

In 3e if one took Favoured Soul as ones class and then became a Mystic Prestige class, one could even be a Charisma based, spontanous caster.

And with its rich history, Mystic make no sense as a Psion Class in 5e, which almost everyone knows should just be called a Psion.

So what does everyone hear think? Agree, disagree?

Why not do both? emot-zoid.gif

I think WotC's goal for the favored soul is to have a gish subclass for the sorcerer, the fact that it is divine is almost incidental. I suspect the final version will focus on something like "for every sorcery point you spend, your weapon attacks do X more radiant damage for the next minute", rather than giving out any domain spells. I would like a second divine subclass (with more focus on the divine and less on the gish), but I won't hold my breath for it.

I think you will have to wait for 6e to see the psion as an official class (or subclass) name. I think they would rather have used something like occultist than mystic, but that is too close to Pathfinder's products.

I should also add my actual thoughts on this. To me the name "Favoured Soul "sounds like it fits as a sorcerous origin while "Mystic" doesn't seem to belong at all. They may have started from that thought, too.

Agree on the favored soul name. There is always an element of luck to the sorcerer: lucky to have kinky ancestors (dragons? let's start playing the Barry White music), lucky to be born under the big storm, etc., and favored soul fits that to a T.

If they were trying to make an oracle sorcerer (and not use the name "oracle"), mystic might work. To me, anything with the name mystic should fit 2 criteria:
1) It should be focused on the notion that "there are hidden messages and unseen truths in the world" and
2) The connotation that the mystic is someone who doesn't fit in "the normal world" smoothly should be maintained.

I think the Dragon Sorceror is the sorceror gish.

The reason they added some martial ability to the Favoured Soul is because the favoured soul was always somewhat Martial in the past.

Favoured Soul got weapon prof in their deities weapon, and because its MAD most people focused on buffs and summoning over healing spells, damage spells and spells that required a save.

In 4e the Favoured Soul was a Paragons Path of Avenger, which is now a Paladin Oath, so maybe the Favoured Soul should be a Paladin Oath.

The Mystics mechanics just fits with the Sorceror better, the Favoured Soul class didn't have the weapons to make good use of a second attack and its better using Greenflame Blade for Melee anyways. The extra spells known bothered alot of people, its was really the only reason to take Favoured Soul, the winga were good too, but the Dragon Sorceror already got those.

Example

Mystic

1st level- gain ritual casting and a ritual book and the Find Familiar Ritual and Charm Person (it becomes a ritual for you). gain cure wounds spell. You magic is divine and you can use a holy symbol as an implement.

6th level- candle and potion magic. Spend sorcery point equal to a spells level to turn the spell you use to turn it into a candle or potion.

14th level poison kit profiency, which you can also use to craft antidotes. Learn Raise dead as a ritual.

18th you can deliver healing via your familiars touch. You can create a special candle that can act as either True Reserrection or as a Power Word Kill when lit, depending on if your Good or Evil. A neutral character picks one and has to stick with the choice.
