D&D 5E A few odd rulings I had to make...

What do you all think about these situations?

1. I allowed the witch to charm one of her comrades in order to counteract the Snake Queen's charm on him.

2. I allowed the ranger to use his skill in performance and nature to lull a pit full of snakes into a hypnotic trance with his lute.

I'm not sure why those ruling would be considered "odd." They seem like the normal types of rulings that need to be made in the game, and the reason it's played with a DM. They make sense to me.
 



They seem like reasonable rulings. Not the only reasonable ones, but I wouldn't argue with them.
 

All good. Coming up with creative ways to overcome challenges is a lot of the fun of the game, and one that separates it from games without a live DM.
 

I might have called for Animal handling on the snake pit thing, but these seem fine to me.

I try to let my players choose which skill to use - I'll just go with what they suggest, or change my decision if they say "hry how about this instead? - so I'd go with either Animal Handling or Performance, or instrument proficiency, or even Persuasion or whatever.

I try to be lenient so that as many options as possible remain, uh, possible.

Yeah, I didn't mean to say that I only would have allowed Animal Handling, just that it would have been my first choice, and it could have changed if my player said something like "Could my Performance skill apply, or my Proficiency with my Lute?"

I agree with everyone who has contributed previously, these are perfectly reasonable things to rule on.

You haven't provided much detail, but if you're soliciting additional considerations...

1. I would consult the rules on combining magical effects for more guidance on how to resolve the charm battle taking place between the witch and the Snake Queen. (Which one has the most potent charm effect?)

2. I would use the statistics for a swarm of poisonous snakes to populate a dungeon pit, and immunity to the charmed condition would guide me to disallow any benefit from a musical performance. (Besides, everyone knows only the sound of a shawm is hypnotizing to snakes!)
