Surprisingly, so was Middle Earth.
I knew that, surprisingly (as I know little of Middle Earth--just what I've seen in the films).
Howard does a more convincing job, I think, in that Conan's known world is made up of what he thought the European continent would look like before it "broke apart" and drifted into the shape we know today.
And, the background cultures he uses for the peoples of the world mirror that of ancient earth. Conan's Cimmerians are meant to grow into the Celts of Ireland and Scotland. People from Brythunia will one day be Britons (Brythuns). Zingarans will be Spanish. The Black Kingdoms and the southern part of the continent will become Africa. And so on.

Lots of continental drift and uplift in a short period of time geologically.
