This thread has become a car wreck for me... I see it has new posts and I HAVE TO READ them! ARG! :)

Wrong. Catnap gives the benefit of taking a Short Rest, but you don't take a Short Rest. Which means that spending hit dice *is* part of the spell.

Last I checked, Catnip doesn't give you hit dice to spend. So, if you don't have any hit dice to spend before said spell is cast on you, you can't heal.

In my opinion at least, something only counts as a healing spell if all the resources (actions are not a resource in this case) required for the healing to occur are provided by the spell itself.

Going back to the OP:

So this thread is to answer a simple question. Would you say rope trick heals?

Though the spell can certainly enable healing, I would not say that rope trick- on its own- heals.

I find the case for Carnap more compelling than the case for goodberry

I cast Carnap!

That's like saying that a potion of healing doesn't directly heal, because it just sits around until you drink it.

Eating berry created by Goodberry spell or drinking a healing potion: directly heal.

Casting the goodberry spell to create berries: Does not directly heal.

Nope, not anything like each other.

You're the one who brought up "direct" as a criteria, how can a spell that doesn't target a creature and doesn't heal on casting be "direct".
