Fantasy Grounds Now Offers Free Trial; Plus D&D 5E Basic Rules Now Included In All Licenses

Virtual Tabletop Fantasy Grounds has been the licensed VTT for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition for a while now. The price point can be a little steep for those who just want to try it out, so Smiteworks has just announced a free 30-day trial (you have to sign up then cancel before it's up) and also that the D&D Basic Rules are now included in all Licenses and Subscriptions (other than the demo). That's the four basic 5E reaches and classes, plus 120+ spells, equipment, and the basic rules reference. It also includes, of course, other game like Call of Cthulhu, Castles & Crusades, and Savage Worlds.

The basic player's guide and DM's guide modules come with the trial as well. There is a bit of a learning curve, but we hope that with 30 days, it should give people more than enough time to get in, build a few characters, build encounters and stories and run through some game sessions with friends or with other people in the FG community. Unlike the demo that we still have available, this trial will let you save any campaigns you run. If you maintain the subscription or move to a permanent license, you can continue where you left off or pick it up after a hiatus as long as you keep the files on your computer.

Finally, while it is meant for online play, some users use it as a way to build characters and then create printable character sheets using a fan-made utility that reads in the XML and generates a PDF. You can get that here:

The thanks go out to Wizards of the Coast as well since when I brought up the suggestion of including the modules for all FG users, they immediately thought it was a good idea and gave it their full support.

The biggest difference between the D&D Basic Rules version of the Monster lists and the full MM packs is the additional description, artwork and tokens. Similarly, the player packs beyond the basic rules also include official portraits. It's not a major difference, but worth pointing out.

I am not really interested in this product, but I am curious about one thing: if they just added Basic to all their versions of the VTT, what material did the VTT included until yesterday? Was it just empty?
