D&D 5E Curse of Strahd - the remix (feedback)

Blistering Barnacles!
These sorts of threads tend to flop, but thought I'd give it a try and get some ideas.

I'm running CoS for the second time around, and was started to get jaded with it. It seemed odd to me that Strahd would just sit around and let adventurers wander across his land, collecting items and getting stronger for nothing more than entertainment.

I decided to chuck that out the window, and came up with a new goal for Strahd. It's mixed in with the current plot, so spoiler alert.

In summary, Strahd has been trapped in Barovia for thousands of years. Countless groups of adventurers have come to challenge him. He's killed countless parties, and has also been blasted with the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind countless times, whaled on with the sun sword, and on and on. If he's killed, he comes back.

He's also lost several incarnations of Tatyana, and can never truly bring her back. He also occasionally weeps for Sergei, and regrets what he did. All of this combined is the Curse of Strahd.

So - now what. He wants OUT, and is willing to play the long game to do it. Inspired by the Tom Cruise movie Edge of Tomorrow, Strahd has been refining his plan over successive attempts and learning from them each time, Every time he dies he gets to try again, his memory does not reset.

The Vestiges at the Amber Temple may or may not be aware of this plan - after all one or more of them may have an interest in leaving Barovia as well...

So here's the current set up - on of the PC's has Rictavio's ring of mind shielding, with Rictavio's soul in it. Strahd is basically going to threaten / cajole the PC to give the ring to him, or steal / take it from them. After that the adventure continues as normal, and the party puts on a show exploring the castle etc and having epic fight with Strahd. During this fight, Strahd takes a dive and his soul enters the ring. After he dies the party takes the ring back with them, and Strahd escapes. Sure he's stuck in the ring, but he's out and deciding what to do with him after sounds interesting.

Few questions pop up - aside from bullying them into it (I'll kill you now if you don't) why would party co-operate?The tables turn if / when they have Strahd's soul in the ring, but he's willing to take that chance. He lives forever, so can just wait until the PCS die and someone finds the ring and so on.

Do the vestiges know? They're not omnipotent / omnipresent. If they do know, so what?

Rictavio's soul is in the ring, and Strahd killed him. That's a problem... unless they kind find a new body for him. He for sure won't want to co-operate with Strahd on anything.

In any case, appreciate some thoughts . . !

Gaming is fun, and fun is for everyone
Just some thoughts on the vestiges (or Dark Powers); it's well established that they enjoy torturing Strahd and have no intention of wanting him to leave. They're definitely not omnipotent, and have actually been foiled before by Vecna escaping Ravenloft.

So if you want to do this, i'd either have this escaping the Dark Powers notice... or they are totally ok with it because they fully expect Strahd to fail and return somehow.

HawaiiSteveO - this is basically how I run/am running/will run

The party ran through the whole module and imprisoned Strahd in a puppet (Vistani Effigy) ala Dice Camera Action, once they left the plane, Rahadin would steal the puppet, free him and Strahd would be free to act as he willed in Faerun.

Of course the Warlock in the party through a wrench in this by destroying the puppet as he left the plane.

(I didnt like the dark powers, My Strahd made a deal with Orcus, who imprisoned him in ravenloft when he got to be too much to handle)

So my party has been adventuring on the Sword Coast as it literally turns into the abyss. Orcus (or some other demon havent decided yet) is doing a ritual to turn Faerun into an abyssal layer, helping this along by creating chaos in all the major citys, the players dealt with a plague outbreak in Baldurs Gate and have just fled Waterdeep as it was overcome by Undead. They know the Wand of Orcus is behind this.

Currently they are off looking for the headband of Anarachles (Sp) to try to destroy or banish the wand.

After that I see them figuring out how to get to the abyss to disrupt the ritual.
I see them returning from the outer planes victorious and setting foot on Faerun only to be back in ravenloft with the entire scenario reset.

I plan to run it basically like a new adventure but will beef up the encounters some. I expect the party will quickly realize that the whole scenario is replaying.

Once they realize its replaying, they will quickly head to the Castle and confront Strahd again. Strahd will tell them that the ritual in the abyss was a minor one designed to keep him imprisoned and that once he kills them he is truly free. End of Campaign (one way or another)

Theres lots of subplotty stuff going on - but thats the main plot line

Love to hear thoughts and comments

Love it that's dope!

I'd say ring with Strahd's soul is Artifact, not just something that can be thrown into lava etc. I like Rahadin but was thinking Strahd has cultists out there too... or some guy named Renfield. Might figure out a way to work it into Avernus story line if / when they get back.

I really want them to explore some of Amber Temple and Castle Ravenloft though so need to figure out why they just can't leave right away. They have to put on the usual show for sure. Why would party cooperate and not just tell Strahd no? He'd say fine have it your way then invite to join him at castle for dinner anyway.
