D&D 3E/3.5 Nostalgia - GenCon

None of us will be visiting Indianapolis for GenCon this year. I recall many years of attending the con and meeting folks from EN World, attending the ENnies, trying out weird games with old friends I was seeing for the first time, and doing a very nerdy brand of debauchery at the Embassy Suites. I hope in a year I'll be able to see you all again there.

I happen to be moving this week, and in the process of deciding what to keep and what to Marie Kondo, I came upon the leather-bound special edition of the D&D 3.5 Player's Handbook that I got at GenCon 2005. I think I may even have won it at some quirky game show the WotC booth was putting on back then, which you got a chance to play based on how many of their games you demoed. In any case, I remember being effusively excited about this souvenir, and I tried to get as many EN World posters as possible to sign it.

I'm sure many of these people have moved on. At least one was outed as a giant a-hole and I hope we never see him again. But many are still here, and man, how crazy is it that we've been talking nerdy to each other for over 15 years.

Check out these images. I'll try to identify posters whose handwriting I recognize.

In file 02, I see messages from Cthulhu's Librarian (Richard, who I don't think still posts here), the famous DangerGirl (Liz, who at the time always cocked her head to one side in photos), @Psion (Alan), @Truth Seeker (Carlos), the legendary @Piratecat (Kevin), Chris Gath (whose screen name I forget), Fusangite (Stuart), @Teflon Billy (Jeff), Rel (whom I always got confused in person with Reveal, to my chagrin), Buttercup (who maybe only ever posted over at CircvsMaximvs), plus a few signatures I don't recognize.

In file 03, you'll see @Erik Mona chastising me because I met him three times at the convention and kept forgetting his name, including once on the ride up in an elevator to the ENnies. Also there, Dama de Espadas (Gabi), Steve Jung, Xath (Gertie), John Crichton (Matt), and Chrystine (daughter of then ENnies head honcho Denise).

File 04 has only a few people I remember this long after: Ethernaut (Tim) and Jester Poet (Todd).

File 05 has @JediSoth (Hans, who went on to be a published novelist), Kennon Bauman, der_kluge, Joseph Goodman (of Goodman Games, though I don't know if he has a username here anymore), also James from Fiery Dragon, Steve Kenson who published Mutants & Masterminds, Pielorinho, Whirligig (Stacy), Sidereal Knight, and Keeper of Secrets (Matthew).

If anyone recognizes any of the other signatures, please post. If you signed my book, please chime in. And I hope people who have been to GenCon and have met other EN Worlders will share their experiences.

That is a FLOOD of nostalgia bowling me over to look at those signatures. 🥰

I think I do recognize Keith Strohm’s signature on File 05, left hand page, at top.
Also, file 04, Mik (Archon), was dating Gertie (Xath) back then, and they later married. Assuming that’s the same person, his spelling of his name always stood out to me.
I don’t recognize any you didn’t mention, past that. It now occurs to me I haven’t seen or heard from some of those people for over 10 years now...

Not your screen monkey (he/him)
The WotC gameshow? I remember those from other years (didn’t attend in 2005). Little kids got preferential treatment - at least mine did.
