D&D 5E 3 Classic Settings Coming To 5E?

The faction war can start again in Sigil, but this time more secret, or using the gate-twons as battlefields of a proxy war. I don't know enough the Mystara setting but I would dare to say if a cold war ends, a new ones can start easily. Mystara also can suffer menaces from other corners of the multiverse. Sometimes the enemy front of you isn't more dangerous than the betrayer on your back.

The other continents, Skothar and Davania could cause great surprises in a reedition of the setting. And you shouldn't bet Alphatian empire has said its last word.

Nenthir Vale could be used as a joker card and a transition setting, allowing planar gates between the different worlds. Something happened in the crystal sphere, maybe a war between two time-traveler factions, and now there are lots of mirror universes, or mirror pocket universes, and theses with planar gates toward other worlds. Now it would be a cosmic Gruyère cheese ( = full of holes). Some of these demiplanes could be visited by creatures of other franchises, for example Gamma World of d20 Future (the classic crashed alien ship).

Flintlock fantasy is possible in D&D, for example Red Steel and Ravenloft, but the firearms can break easily the power level. If you can be Solomon Kane, why to be Conan the barbarian? What if the PCs are from an acient civilitation and the enemies are invaders with better technology?

You do realize that the so-called “right” way of treating these fictitious species at the table is facing considerable backlash in the real world, right?

I think WotC will feel comfortable going back to the "peak" of old settings - Dark Sun 4e ignored everything after the first novel and is clearly held in high regard despite other issues people have with the system.

I really really hope so. I loved the hell out of Planescape and Faction War really bugged me. Given 5e's propensity for ignoring past canon when they want to, I certainly hope that if they do bring us back to PS that they just kinda leave that bit behind.

I imagine for many groups treating the races "right" doesn't include the goal of stopping players from playing them.

Oh, the Alphatia continent got relocated into Hollow World, you can bet it’s 20th/36th level 1,000 archmages will be working on ways around the immortal magic that put them in the Hollow World museum. But the remainders of their empire left behind, IMO, are no longer saddled by the yoke of Alphatians and are free to pursue their own ends and expansions. There are just as much interesting stories and intrigues.

Or the Lady of Pain might just let them back in to Sigil again, but with restrictions that make factional fighting much more behind-the-scenes. That opens things back for factional conflict, but with more nuance and intrigue.

That was always one of the biggest plotholes in post-Wrath Mystara. According to the rules everybody 9th level or higher remembers life above ground. Alphatia has a thousand max level wizards minimum plus countless more at 9th level or higher. They're an empire. With airships and wizards far beyond the scope of the magic users of the Hollow World, wielding magic the natives there haven't even dreamed of. Most of the nations below them are technologically trapped thousands of years behind them. So nigh unstoppable fantasy wizard army with an air force and an army of hundreds of thousands facing Zulus, Spartans, Aztecs and Ancient Egyptians.

It would be a slaughter. The entire Hollow World would be conquered in less than a year.

Or because the inbuilt stereotypes in a race let people tell a story. Tieflings for example have been practically adopted by the LGBT audience due to their story being "You're born looking like this and people don't like it for things outside of your control, but you triumph above it" which, y'know, is a resounding story (plus also certain things both queer-coding villains and adding devilish features to them which leads to it sort of reinforcing it)

You want to play as an outcast from their society, rebelling against their rules? Well, why the piss would you pick a human when that is literately in-built in being Drow?

Its not 'halloween costumes', its because people like the ideas or messages these races provided and want to play them in a fantasy game and explore things through other lenses
