A problem with the miniatures industry.

Honestly, I don't know how you could have "queer" minis. I mean, queer people look like everyone else. How would a mini look any different from any other mini?

Ahem.....

You're right of course. But I thought this was too funny to pass up.

I've had 2 players just re-sculpt a particular lead or epoxy mini to get the look they want. I'm not trying to be facetious or promote a new fad in figurine cosmetic surgery, but apparently a real community exists out there, that aren't opposed to taking their hobby knives to a figurine they feel doesn't match their concept. If I recall from what my players mentioned (1 a fine arts grad with some sculping experience, the other a model builder) it's easier with the lead figurines because they can be re-sculpted with a sharp hobby/small carving knife, but IIRC the epoxies need such a knife to be heated up.

Today's miniatures are typically made from a plastic rather than an epoxy. I started my miniatures adventures back in the 80s with lead/pewter miniatures and I can tell you that modifying metal miniatures is a major pain in the butt compared to today's plastic. Someone who is new to miniatures is going to have a miserable time trying to modify metal figures.

I came across this thread while searching for mini sculptor Jeff Grace.

for a rogue like in the opening post, those would be the easiest to find, found 7 on dark sword that could be used that aren’t muscle or boob bound, could be used for the mini needed.

Is the issue that most of the minis say male or female on them? Wizkids went away from using male/female for a little while (maybe still do) and used pronouns for minis.

Today I was at the FLGS looking for a miniature. I have hundreds of them, and I didn’t have one that would work. So I went to the store. They didn’t have one that would work either.
So what is this elusive mini I was looking for?

one of the players in my group is gender neutral. Their character is also gender neutral. Finding a mini that would work is near impossible. The only minis that appear androgynous or gender neutral are covered from head to toe in robes with deep hoods. Every male PC is super male, and every female mini have the same sized breasts. Did you realize that? I didn’t until today when I looked for a mini that could pass as gender neutral and literally every female mini has a C cup. Every one. Finding a feminine mini with no noticeable breasts is near impossible

in this day when Mattel has released a gender neutral doll lone, and with geeks being pretty progressive, I was a bit surprised that there aren’t really any options for PC races that are androgynous. The best you can do is use an elf male and sorta try to use it.
Not to sound flippant but....learn to convert models.

There have been plenty of games where characters, monsters, npcs and other things descriptions in books sounded great, but there isn't a mini for it. So I had to make them. With exactly knives, green stuff, kit bashing and other ways. And that was before hero forge and 3D printers were around.

I'm having to do this now for my upcoming champions game this summer. Either I use hero clicks or I roll up my sleeves and start making what I need.

Its not easy at times, I won't lie. But you aren't always going to find the miniatures you need. Its what I have learned over the years. Companies aren't going to have produced every conceivable miniature

EDIT. Realized I was replying to something three years old. Better to let it rest. Post removed.

Not everyone has both talent and the time to do that. It's like adventures - if everyone had the talent and time to homebrew, we wouldn't need them.

Like I said, it’s not easy. But expecting miniature companies to make every miniature YOU want just sets up disappointment.

Today there are a lot more options and 3D printers. But if you really want what you want you might have to roll up your sleeves and give it a go.

Further still, there are companies out there that paint and convert minis. I’ve outsourced a project or three that I didn’t have time for

But as a counter point, not everyone has the time or talent to run games as a DM either. But you never know till you try.

I'm not saying they need to do everything I want. I'm saying there are enough gamers out there that it shouldn't be unreasonable for minis to represent all body types and appear androgynous. Especially with so many big minis companies out there.
