Name: Taylor Willoughby

Current residence and occupation: Currently lives in a townhouse in London. He doesn't really have a job, but does manage some investments and other affairs for the family. Otherwise he spends his time in academic study and looking into strange events for evidence of the supernatural.

World view: Believes in magic and the supernatural along theoretical lines. He sees that there are certain threads and themes- archetypes, if you will- among almost every society and people. He believes that these are symbols and allegories which hide the way things truly work, and that the common threads can be pieced together to come up with a true magical system.

Personal goals and motivations: As outlined above, study magic and supernatural occurances across the world and use them to unlock the secrets of the way things truly work. Balance this with keeping his family happy, both re business and belief systems, and occasionally try to get out for some entertainment.

Taylor Willoughby was born July 19, 1975. While growing up, he divided his time between his family's manor house (located outside of Canterbury in southeastern England) and various private schools. Growing up he became used to affluence and has had a somewhat sheltered upbringing. He has an older sister (May, age 31) and a younger brother (Sebastian, age 24).

To all appearances, the Willoughbys are typical upper-class, English gentry. No one really works full time, instead attending to politics and society. Most of the family's money comes from trusts, investments, and properties, although May is an active businesswoman and has the closest to a "career" of any family member. However, the Willoughbys do have one unusual trait they keep hidden from others- they are all occult practicioners of one degree or another. All family members belong to an esoteric order called the Pilgrims of Light, which is organized along the lines of traditional secret societies such as the Golden Dawn. The Pilgrims firmly believe that magic and the occult sciences are real, and that they can be used to both learn about the universe and to better oneself. Although rooted in traditional European practices, these days most Pilgrims also study Eastern philosophy, tribal beliefs, and other systems, resulting in a sort of New Age hodge-podge.

According to tradition, an Elizabethan ancestor, Roland Willoughby, travelled Europe seeking out occult knowledge, and eventually returned to England to form the Order with several like-minded individuals, including the astrologer John Dee. Taylor has researched this and has found only scant evidence to support this- he suspects that the Pilgrims were probably founded around 1800 as part of an "occult chic" hitting Europe. However, he's learned to keep his opinions to himself.
Technically, only men are supposed to be full members of the Pilgrims, and women are considered "auxilliary" members, with specific knowledges to learn and duties to attend. In practice, everyone tends to be on equal footing and simply pursues their own interests. The family regularly conducts rituals and ceremonies for various reasons- wealth, good fortune, the expansion of the mind- but the ceremonies never have any visual effect.

Besides their prep-school educations, all the children of the family also received private tutoring in such unusual subjects as alchemy, astrology, mythology, and ritual magic. Now grown, all are more or less considered to be full members of the order, although Sebastian seems to take his membership and duties the most seriously. May seems to be unusually grounded for a member of the family, and prefers to deal with worldly matters- Taylors thinks she is probably expressing a strong individualist streak, or perhaps overcompensating for the apparent sexism within the Order. Again, he keeps his opinions to himself. He prefers to follow his own studies, and is a dependable but by no means dedicated participant in the Pilgrims' activities.

Especially of late, Taylor has begun to question the whole point of the Pilgrims and his family's membership. It seems to him that the teachings, rituals, and the like are so much tradition and dogma, and that there is very little genuine magic left in the Order. The ceremonies and rituals never have any visible or discernable effect, although other members are quick to point to some good turn or other as being the "result" of a particular spell. Taylor believes this is simply coincidence and, even more likely, a case of them seeing what they wish to see. While everyone around him feels that they are performing magic and unlocking secrets, Taylor thinks that they are all doing it from habit, and don't really have any kind of feeling for what they are doing.

Although the Pilgrims' stated goal is keep magic alive, for Taylor it is just the opposite- having grown up around rituals and occult ideas, they are commonplace to him, and he fails to see any sort of mystery or spirituality in them. In short, they don't hold any magic for him at all. He has been grappling with these ideas for a few years now. About the time he began to feel lackluster about the Pilgrims, he also began having strange dreams. The exact content of these he often does not remember; however, they have left him with a feeling that there is true magic out there, and that he can unlock its secrets if he applies his knowledge in new ways. Taylor now finds that he is able to find concepts and draw conclusions that he had not seen before, and that the various systems of belief make more sense to him on an intuitive level. He attributes these insights to his own subconcious, and believes that he is finding a more fundamental path to Truth than the simple ritual recitations that he has been used to. However, progress is slow, and he is growing somewhat impatient. It may be that he will soon be ready to take more radical steps, such as experimenting with spirit channelling or mind-altering drugs, but he has yet to settle on a method which he likes.

Appearance/personality: Most times, Taylor gives the appearance of a well-dressed scholar or businessman. Around strangers he is polite and somewhat withdrawn. He realizes that his upbringing was unusual, and that many people he meets would consider his beliefs and theories to be eccentric at best. When he does find someone he considers a "kindred spirit", he is quicker to open up to them, and displays a passion for his work bordering on obsession. Generally he is quiet and reserved, focusing on his work, however ever few weeks he will cut loose and either take a short vacation or, more and more often, run wild among parties and the London social scene. He's especially fond of underground dance clubs and raves, as he enjoys electronica, ambient, and tribal music.

Tyrone Gustalf had an unhappy childhood. He was a smart kid in school, always getting ahead in his classes. Like many smart kids though, he was teased a lot. This forced him into a secluded life, experimenting with science. The only other unusual thing about him was that he could predict numbers occasionally. The roll of a dice at a crucial moment. The next ball down in lotto. The licence plate of the next car to drive past. It didn’t always happen, and sometimes he was wrong. But it happened often enough to not be coincidence.

Ty can also use his predictions somewhat for stealth, although it is rare for him to use it like that. Knowing when a guard's head will turn is often handy.

He also read a lot, and through his diverse reading once found a book dealing with occult sciences. He passed this off as some sort of weird fiction, but the knowledge it had contained was always drilling into his skull. He began to have dreams. He had had dreams before, but not like this. It was so vivid, almost real. The dream was always the same, him looking down from the view of a bid at a tangled, dense forest. The dream bugged him. Its sameness. Its consistency. Was it another prediction? Ty deeply hoped so. He dearly wanted to leave his home city behind, and live without the noise and pollution of society. But more than that, he wanted to be alone.

Ty got the university placement he wanted despite the distraction of the dream. He was educated in physics, and had a goal of being a quantum mechanic. The things he learnt there however added to what he had learnt in what he now referred to as “the Book”. He had long ago lost it. It had disappeared from his shelf like it had never been there. But the deeper he went into his research the more things began to trouble him. Once he had graduated, he got a job at the University as a junior researcher a few months ago. His future secured, he began to actively seek others who shared his feelings of oddness in the universe.

One of Ty's main associates is his professor, a man from India. A brilliant scientist, he emigrated from India to England some years ago to spread his somewhat far-fetched theories. Ty was fascinated by these theories, and wondered whether they would bear any fruit.

Background: Charles (or Chuck, or Charlie, depending on who's talking) had it hard growing up. The third of four children in his family, happiness tended to be scarce and money even moreso; his mother worked full-time at a nursing home, while his father was pretty much a professional drinker, and little else. On his twelth birthday, he recieved a guitar from his parents, probably the only gift that really mattered - he seemed to have a natural talent for playing it.

At the age of seventeen, Charles got into an argument with his father that ended in violence. Three days later, with a black eye and a bruised heart, he dropped out of school, packed up his clothes and guitar, and left without a word. He's never been back since.

He spent the next couple of years hitchhiking around the country, living off of whatever he could make doing odd jobs, playing bars, or from the very rare displays of kindness from strangers.

When he was twenty he met Elizabeth, the love of his life. Though their relationship was sometimes rocky, they genuinely loved each other, and with her support, Charles was finally starting to really move somewhere. Things were looking great until the accident; Elizabeth died, while Charles was barely scratched.

Since then, Charles has reverted back to his old lifestyle, moving from town to town and making what he can from performing.

Personality: Charles tends to be a mellow sort. Something about his demeanor seems to make people want to confide in him, and he's more than willing to listen to other peoples' woes; it distracts him from his own. When not around others, he takes to drinking and wallowing in his own regret. Though he isn't terribly lacking in willpower, he somehow lacks the drive to truly accomplish something.

Appearance: Simply from looks, Charles is entirely unremarkable. He's apparently in his late twenties/early thirties (he's 28). Average looks, with brown hair and eyes, a fairly average height (just a little short of six foot), and plain, usually threadbare clothes make it a rare occasion for him to stand out in a crowd.

Notes: Charles' specialty for his high charisma is "compelling". I see this as being a knack for holding people's attention. Even when talking about the most mundane things, his mannerisms and speech just make it seem fascinating.

His single dot in influence represents his many years as a musician travelling the U.S. He's played with just about any and everybody, and can probably drop some impressive names. On the other hand, some people heavily into the music scene, especially local scenes and such, might have heard his name.

Finally, though I'm loathe to use a picture of Tom Waits (one of the inspirations for the character to begin with), I think it fits my idea for Charles perfectly.

Background: Jason Siddique came from a long tradition of successful professionals. His father was a physicist employed at a large multinational and his mother a doctor. He had two older brothers that were engineers and a sister who was a lawyer. The Siddique's as a family were generally logical, orderly and right-thinking people.

Jason was not.

He was more interested in the abstract than the physical, more interested in the mysteries of the human heart than the mysteries of the electron. Eschewing more scholarly pursuits, the young Jason spent most of his time creating. Drawing, painting, sculpting, writing when the muse took him he would spend his time working exclusively on some piece of art. What was the point of pursuing an education if that education couldn't be applied to what was relevant in his life? he often thought.

Yet his parents were not interested in his excuses; make something of yourself, they would say; follow the rules and know your place in society, and you would find happiness. Ironically, the act of imposing their will upon young Jason made him a very unhappy individual, and he constantly looked for an escape from the drudgery of his life.

Pressured to do well academically, Jason did the minimum work required. He would go through all the motions, while secretly despising it all. If he could manage it, he'd sneak off to drown his sorrows in drink or any other recreational narcotic he could get his hands on.

It was in his last year at high school when he first had an inkling that the world was not quite as he had always believed it. He had applied, along with a prestigious state university, to a college of art and design. It was mostly a longshot; the college had limited space, and were highly selective. Jason was in for a surprise, however. Impressed with the young man's emotive artwork, they offered him a spot which he quickly accepted.

When his parents found out, they were enraged. They accused him of sabotaging his career, and he accused them of holding him hostage. He stormed out of his home and went to a local watering hole, where he drowned his anger in more liquour and drew doodles to release his rage. They started off simple, but finally when he was done, he had a drawing of the giant house he had spent most of his life in, set ablaze with the fires of frustration.

His biggest shock on returning home was to find that the fire department had just beaten him home. Apparently they
were too late; the place had been burned to the ground. Fortunately, the rest of the family had been out for various reasons and insurance would pay for the home. But the investigators found that the fire had originated in Jason's room. Even though he claims to this day he had nothing to do with it, his parents disbelieve.

And so now he lives as a "starving artist" student, on his own, trying to juggle life between his studies of the fine arts and just surviving.

And every once in a while, he'll remember the fire.

Todd Whitford was born in New York to a fairly well-off family. His mother was a biologist, and his father was an architect and, infrequently, a member of the city council. Both of their jobs demanded a large time commitment, and thus, as a child and adolescent, Todd had a lot of free time and was never closely watched. As so often happens with such young men, he quickly found himself in trouble; he followed a couple of his friends into a gang. He never really knew what he was getting into - it was almost naivete that put him in this position. Within a month, one of the gang's crimes went sour, forcing them to flee the gun-shop they'd been robbing in the face of police pursuit. Todd Whitford was left holding the ball - and the evidence, landing him a brief stay in jail and finally awakening his parents to what they'd inadvertently let happen.

Since he was still a juvenile in high school, Todd was transfered to an 'alternative education' school and rehabilitation center, a government-sponsored endeavor that taught young criminals skills that would hopefully put them on the path to a new life and keep them off the streets. Among other self-confidence and reflection techniques, one thing that was taught was meditation. Todd found he had an odd affinity for this - he was quickly able to get into the trance, and when he was, he would see flashes of things - of his life up to now, of the busy city around him, and, most disturbing, indecipherable images he felt strangely certain showed his future. At the same time, he began having frighteningly realistic dreams; he would see himself walking around, speaking to his parents, going to school, and many other usual and not-so-usual events; once he even thought he was watching his old gang returning as they robbed, for a second time, the store where Todd had been caught at.

Most perplexing of all to him was a dream in which Todd saw himself leaving the rehab center during the night and returning to his house. He awoke in a sweat, only to discover that he was lying on the floor of his parents' attic. They chalked it up to sleepwalking; the institute called it an escape attempt; but neither of these explained how he'd gotten through the locks.

Despite this incident, he finished his eduaction at the center and, having done well in school despite the lone act of misconduct, was funneled through a goverment-sponsored program into Boston University. But the dreams continued.

Todd is of average height, has red hair and hazel eyes, and a place on his high school's soccer team has given him a fairly athletic build. He was once fairly outgoing, but a year in the rehabilitation center surrounded by budding young criminals, many of whom had committed far worse crimes that he had, has dampened this somewhat. Todd has wisened up a bit since being caught, and he tends to be more careful around people than he once was.
