I agree, the archdevils are slightly off. However, the book does mention for Asmodeus that his each of his 10 avatar forms are gentlemen, "and handsome to boot." (page 216).
I read that, it made the art work seem even more strange. I do want to be clear that I don't hate the art - just not quite my style

It's worth noting that Asmodeus is not just an archdevil, but a deity, and a deity can appear however they wish without polymorphing themselves with a spell - it's due to the mutable nature of their quasi-spiritual, quasi-physical, quasi-conceptual bodies.

As such, every depiction of Asmodeus ever included in official publication could be considered "correct".

Not really @dave2008 's point though.

I'm honestly the opposite as far as the appearances of the arch-devils goes, I'd rather them be more monstrous, not just sexy humans with horns. Grant it, I hate powerful planar creatures that are just humans with some planar features (the angels are the worse offenders and why I can't stand the standard Aasimar who is just a human that glows a bit).

This preference is probably why most of my pantheon isn't humanoid in anyways, and most of the planar creatures I use aren't just humans with angel wings or humans with devil horns and wings.

Not for me. Asmodeus was an archdevil in the beginning and will remain so in my games. That is technically true in 5e too, from the 2014 Monster Manual:

Edit: It seems like this remains largely true with this version of Asmodeus too (though the like the dicefreaks fallen support story too):

I get your point, but we have a lot of other fiends to fill those roles. Heck, not even some of the archdevils lean to the monstrous side. I guess I just my archdevils a more in between:

Making the devils more monstrous has them stepping on Demon Lord toes, it's one the things that expres lawful vs chaotic evil.

Unfortunately for me I have to wait for my next paycheck before I can think about getting this, so my ability to talk about it is limited. I will say from some of the reviews coming in and some of what is said here this is on my Top 5 gets from DMs Guild... In no particular order:
  • Manual of the Planes
  • Arcanum Worlds Presents: Chains of Asmodeus
  • Curse of Strahd Companion: The Complete Edition (for my wife, she loves running Ravenloft)
  • Heroes of Baldur's Gate (Written and Designed by James Ohlen and Jesse Sky)
  • Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy (Also Extra Life, Written and Designed by James Ohlen)
I'm on the same page - I didn't even know about the last two, I'm gonna go see what they're about.
I also feel we are going to get some amazing 3pp companion content for Chains of Asmodeus so I'm looking forward to that.
