Critical Role announced the launch of Beacon, a subscription service for fans of Critical Role. While all existing streaming content will be available as always on Twitch and YouTube, but the service will offer exclusives such as access to an exclusive Discord server, immediate podcast and VOD recordings of live shows, early access to Critical Role Abridged and The Re-Slayer’s Take, and exclusive new shows including Critical Role Fireside Chat and Critical Role Cooldown.

Critical Role Fireside Chat will be a monthly AMA interview show featuring a different cast member. Each episode will be live streamed taking questions from the members-only Discord lasting 30-60 minutes. The first episode on May 21 will feature Matt Mercer.

Critical Role Cooldown is a backstage pass to Critical Role each week with post-show reactions, pitching plans from the cast, and more. The first ten episodes are available now starting with Campaign 3, Episode 83, and new episodes will air every Thursday following the live stream.

Members will also have access to pre-sales for events starting with Critical Role Live at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on June 15, 2024. Paid members (not free trial accounts) will have access to purchase tickets on May 20 at 10:00 AM Pacific, while general sales open the following day.

Sign-ups are open now for a free 7-day trial, which will be auto-renewed for $5.99 at the end of the trial and on each month thereafter.

There really isn't much difference between CR being live or pre-recorded, except how the cast got spoiled a few times watching chat theories.

The recorded stuff is handled almost exactly the same as the live shows. They barely do anything different.

And probably the most notable time that happened, Sam seeing "is that Keyleth's mom?" in chat, happened during a prerecorded episode anyway

The only real differences seem to be the giveaways are gone and when major events drop, the CR staff and friends show up in chats to check on people…like they did a few episodes ago.

Not to derail the thread, but what other shows are you listening to? I'm forcing myself to power through the end of Dungeons and Daddies season 2, and could use a palate cleanser.
Worlds Beyond Number, Not Another D&D Podcast, Rotating Heroes (which I didn't like originally but have rediscovered and found to be lightweight fun), Oxventure Academy (the "D&D But Everyone's a Kobold" one-off is one of the funniest D&D things ever) and Nerd Poker round out my list.

I have a preference for funny actual plays, since IMO, a lot of the serious ones don't have players/cast who can pull off the drama at the level that I, as an audience member, really want. But professional comedians can reliably bring the funny. (That said, Worlds Beyond Number is probably 90% serious and is possibly the best "written" actual play ever.)

they are losing viewers and subscribers; maybe this is a way to more directly tap into fan $$. Im not sure if it addresses the fact that they don't play live anymore.

The CR subreddit has been pretty critical (heh) of this campaign since the beginning, though I can't say how representative that is of the wider viewerbase. I can say Campaign 3 didn't resonate with me and I stopped watching it after awhile.
I'm still wondering exactly WHAT IS GOING ON with this campaign. The last thing I thought was happening, based on the random bits I've read in Twitter, was some how doing a kind of Avengers Endgame type deal where the parties of the previous campaigns would converge/join with Bells Hell and they would kill the Moon or some Moon Demon.

Hopefully, next campaign, they go back to basics, with a very traditional set-up for the start. A village in trouble, a new generation of young heroes, etc. -- and get crazy from there.

This season started with so many competing high concepts, including on the DM's side of the screen, it's never really gelled for me.

It is a bit challenging to point to a concise narrative since so many of the PCs are quirky agents of chaos that pull the campaign into diversions. But a major confrontation with a god-killer/moon demon is coming... sometime.

The red moon, Ruidus, is a cage for a god-eating entity from beyond the stars. There’s a civilization of telepaths and telekinetics on Ruidus. It’s very Dark Sun-esque in that the bad guys are in charge and the PCs are freedom fighters. The PCs are running missions for Keyleth, Marisha’s C1 PC. They’re all gathering as many allies as they can for a big fight to stop the Big Bad (Ludinus) from releasing the god eater.

Several PCs from previous campaigns have made appearances and it does come across like a big crossover or capstone event. Which is fueling speculation they’re rebooting Exandria for C4 and a “possible” switch to Daggerheart.

There’s a recurring “what good are the gods, anyway?” conversation at the table between the PCs which is causing quite a few arguments in the fandom.

And there’s “some question” whether the PCs will actually stop the god-eater or let it eat the gods. (There’s not really a question, it’s mostly an RP thing.)

In short, it’s pretty close to your typical JRPG setup. The heroes are either going to kill the gods or the god-eater as the climax of the campaign.
