Wizards of the Coast's Archetype Entertainment to Publish Exodus TTRPG Based on Upcoming Exodus Video Game

In something of a surprise, a video game division of Wizards of the Coast has announced plans to publish EXODUS Traveler’s Handbook, a new tabletop RPG based on their upcoming video game. Archetype Entertainment, a division of Wizards of the Coast, announced plans to publish the new rulebook, with details about the upcoming release found on Archetype's website. The book is being made available to followers of the upcoming game first, starting on December 11th. Details on how to get a copy of the limited quantity book can be found here.

EXODUS Traveler’s Handbook was designed by James Ohlen, who created Exodus and was previously designing tabletop RPG books via his Arcanum Worlds imprint prior to joining Wizards and Archetype Entertainment. Arcanum Worlds had published a 5E third party supplement called Odyssey of the Dragonlords and several D&D 5E supplements on the DMs Guild.

Exodus is a new sci-fi video game that deals with human space colonists fighting against the antagonistic descendants of humanity known as Celestials. The game involves time dilation in space travel, which is why there are both humans and their evolved futuristic descendants in the same game.

Currently, it is unclear whether the TTRPG version of Exodus will use some version of Dungeons & Dragons 5E or if it will be a bespoke new game system. EN World has reached out to Wizards for clarification.

A description of the new RPG can be found below:

• Celebrate with Us – This special FOUNDERS TTRPG edition was created by James Ohlen, the creative visionary behind the highly anticipated EXODUS video game.

• Explore the vast world of EXODUS – Face the challenges of this dark and dangerous futuristic world, set in the expanded universe of the EXODUS video game.

• Become the Traveler – Your destiny is to lead the Travelers, in the hunt to steal alien weapons and technology from the most powerful enemy in this universe – the Celestials.

• Confront Time Dilation – Choices you make create consequences changing the fate of those you love most – and reshaping the future of your entire civilization for generations.

@Jensaarai: Are you able to speak to the time dilation mechanics at all? That's the bit I'm most interested in.

Thanks also for the book order link. Unfortunately, I can't afford it. US$28.55 for the book, US$39.99 for shipping to NZ. US$68.54 = ~NZ$120. 😭
Dang, that's not cheap... I hope they'll put out PDFs sometime soon; any sorta online play would basically require something like that I think.

And sure, I can go over the time dilation a little bit. There's a table right near the beginning of the book, that side-note caused a bit of surprised laughter at how far we were jumping in already with this book.

This lays it out in brief, and then there's a chapter later on that details the random life events that your Anchors (NPCs that your character has a personal connection to, and who help keep you tethered to your home as it changes more and more after each return) can go through while you're gone. It's a bit of accelerated narrative that I kinda like, kicks things forward in interesting ways if you come back and your kid is now an adult with children of their own, or suffered a life-changing accident, or become estranged because of a sense of abandonment.

Lots of narrative juice to be squeezed there, IMHO, and those events will compound and evolve as time passes for them, less so yourself. There's also events that can happen to your entire homeworld, encourage or facilitated by the actions you take with certain artifacts and factions.

I gotta be honest, pretty impressed with how much they put into this.

Do they have a set list of possible homeworlds, or is there a world randomization or building guide...?
Yes, but also no? I'm gonna lean more 'no.'

There's a list of example Traveler Dynasties, which your character becomes a part of for the purposes of leveling. These Dynasties give a brief description and history of their leaders depending on the Era you are in (how much time has passed back home), along with a little mention of the world they're established on. Lidon and the Aslan Dynasty I think might get the most word-space, since it pops up throughout the book and IIRC is also where the game is going to be set at.

The book offers the idea of customizing or coming up with your own unique Dynasties, though I'm really expecting the "Encyclopedia" to go into much more detail on this, since it's referenced so often in the benefits that each Dynasty gives you. I'm also hoping it gives more info on the specific worlds mentioned, like Melayu. I have thoughts that "Chronicles of Melayu" will be either some sort of campaign book, or a more in-depth look at that world and its Dynasty in particular.

That link has the code in there already, for free use;

Underlined it for ya 👍

edit; to clarify, I didn't preorder this game either lol, just got the book cause it looked cool
Thanks for the link. I just ordered the book. I haven't ordered the game, since I really haven't played any videogame in quite some time, but I'm interested in the tabletop version.

I am certainly still more than a bit hesitant about the game. There's definitely tons of enthusiasm and dedication on display publicly from the devs and social media, but the bits of gameplay footage we got to see in some of those trailers didn't necessarily 'wow' me all that much.

But, then again, the initial gameplay trailers for something like Baldur's Gate 3 didn't 'wow' me either, and that turned into a home-run lol.
Exodus is a 5e setting. We can play around with it just like we can play around with any kind of D&D setting. We can add Elf and Orc if we feel like it, and planet Menzoberranzan.

The point is, this is a solid setting. The premise of diversity via time dilatations is robust and can handle many setting concepts.

Hopefully, Exodus will open up to DMsGuild when the video comes out, for people to create more adventures for.

I'm curious if Exodus will be added to D&D Beyond, and also opened up on the DM's Guild . . . it would make sense to me for both to happen, but we'll see.

That would make a whole lot of sense...

Which probably means we can expect WotC to create a new division tasked with creating an entirely new character creation system/VTT/backend/storefront from scratch.
