So I am playing in an online weekly game that has been going on for about a year. In Friday's game an NPC from a group who are asking for our help and discretion casually outed me as a sorcerer to the rest of the party thinking everybody already knew and were cool with it. It is a secret I have been carefully maintaining in character from the other PCs and most NPCs for the entire game with the exception of one NPC sorcerer who I have been learning some magic stuff from. This socially oblivious NPC is a friend of that sorcerer and heard about me from her. It is a homebrew system and setting and sorcerers are not generally trusted, as their magic can cause them to go insane. Which the NPC also pointed out helpfully to reassure everybody once she discovered they had not known. "But the nightmare attacks on your sense of reality and ability to distinguish friend from foe are manageable, so its not really an issue, right?"

:)

I voted yes.

I half-expected to log in this morning and find a "Are Your Players Out to Get You?" parody thread.
Wouldn't necessarily have to be parody, as I've had a player that was "out to get me." He considered his job as a player to ruin the DM's plans for the campaign. Ruining the story was his fun, regardless of how it impacted others. Thankfully I no longer have to game with $^^@#$% like that anymore and love my current group.

It's all because they killed Puffy. I raised her from an egg you know? She was just flying around minding her own business. Looking for a snack before dinner ya know? Obviously the party didn't NEED the pack mule, it barely had anything on it. Certainly no PCs were riding it so it was extra right?

Good thing Puffy had a baby brother, Smokey. I'm making sure to keep Smokey away from adventurers, at least for a few hundred years. Then he's going to go visit the descendants of those adventurers and have a little chat...

I just love how meta these are. Backstory's part of the rules, but isn't. It's a role-playing aid, but not everyone's a role-player. But, they're called role-playing games, right? Or maybe that does stand for rocket-propelled grenade. Maybe TTRPG stands for tactics then role-playing game.

Regardless Overgeeked, that's a lot of rage-quitting. Is there anything you want to tell us? This is a safe place. 🤓

Given some of the groups I've played in, it might stand for Toon Tactics Roleplaying Game. :P

Over on Reddit, I came across an excellent example of an unreasonable DM who is clearly out to ruin his players' fun.

The DM had prepared an adventure where the heroes would remove a vengeful spirit from a sweet old lady's house. The adventure started, and Kevin decided that he wanted to leave town and go exploring yonder mountains instead because "haunted houses suck." This totally unreasonable DM asked, "are you sure you don't want to join your companions in this adventure?" When the player answered in the affirmative, the DM said "Okay, suit yourself. While your friend Kevin is off exploring, the rest of you stand before the doorway of Braddock Manor..." and continued the adventure without him.

The audacity.
