WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

Over on Twitter and Bluesky, Chris Perkins has announced his retirement from Dungeons and Dragons.

Chris Perkins started officially working for Wizards of the Coast in 1997 as an Editor for Dungeon Magazine. Since then, he has functioned as the Editor in Chief of D&D Periodicals, A Senior Producer, and eventually landing as the Senior Story Editor over D&D 5e and Game Architect on D&D 5e 2024.

He also is known for acting as one of the Dungeons Masters for Acquisitions, Incorporated.

Personally, I'll miss the guy's work.

He could probably make a pretty good career at this point by DMing live events or streams.

I guess it depends on how "retired" he plans to be.
Perhaps he could open up a tavern for fledgling Adventurers to get quests in? ;)

At any rate, this is truly the end of an era. Perkins started his career about one year after I first got into D&D. Really puts things into perspective.

Honestly, I’ve long felt Perkins was overrated as both a designer and a “celebrity DM”. (Not saying that he was bad at either; just not as worthy of adulation as a lot of people seem to think.)

However, I am impressed that he managed to last 28 years with the same company. I’ll be interested to see if he gets a new job somewhere else (either in the RPG space or something completely different) or whether he really is retiring.

I do wish him the best! And I’m sure Milo will enjoy having him at home more!

From time to time I ask "Hey, who actually is still doing design work at WotC?" And people have reminded me of Chris Perkins, which always makes me say, "Oh, yeah, I suppose I should probably just chill out..."

And here we are today. I wonder who's going to finally turn the lights off there.

But good on Chris! Enjoy it until you're lured out of retirement by the big bucks of the industry!
