Trying to make an image of a glass rapier... not having much luck.

I'm trying to make an image of a glass rapier. I'd love some advice on how to make this look right, it's just not coming out... ugh.

Well, here's the rapier without my feeble attempts at a "glass" look...

Here's the "glass" version... just doesn't work in my opinion, but I'm not sure what to do.

Is the whole thing supposed to be glass, or just the blade? I'm assuming you're working with Photoshop since your previous thread was about a PS image.

Have you tried making the blade a seperate layer and making it transparent? Perhaps with a wavy filter or something like that to play with the light refraction...

It is in Photoshop :).
I was thinking the whole thing is glass it's made by Avariel glass-smiths (they make all sorts of items in glasssteel). Anyway, I did do all kinds of wavy-filters on it, but on the low-res version I posted it's hard to see. The glass distortion is fairly easy to handle, it's knowing the colors to use, etc. If I simply give the layer a trasnperancy, it just looks washed out.

I think props might be the answer, neutral background and colorful coins or something and then pick up the colors and hint them as reflections along the surfaces. Another interesting tack might be to see if you could achieve a frosted glass look, which would be distinct in that I can't recall ever seeing anyone use it on a blade.

Thought I'd help you out- I created three renders of glass rapiers (two blue and one red). Let me know if you'd like me to fiddle with them a bit more (different color glass, background, etc.).

Kryndal those look fairly cool, thanks :). I really appreciate the effort. Seems it's damn hard to get the glass look...

Judas... here you go :).
