Dungeons & Dragons has come to Fortnite, the popular video game that mixes battle royale gameplay with sandbox-style experiences. The collaboration between Dungeons & Dragons and Fortnite was announced today, with five new islands available to explore within the Fortnite game. Each island has a different gameplay experience, ranging from a cooperative boss fight to a PvP arena experience to a platformer. Various NPCs and locations from D&D will appear on the islands. The islands were designed by community creators Chartis and Teravision Games.

Fortnite is one of the biggest video games in the world, offering a wide range of experiences for players. Countless IPs have come to Fortnite, typically in the form of character skins and aesthetics, although bigger collaborations have also appeared from time to time.

The five island codes are as follows:
  • D&D Boxfights – 1190-4691-0255
  • D&D Treasure RNG – 4958-2624-5634
  • D&D Dungeon Deathrun – 5806-6430-0158
  • D&D Bossfight – 2218-1049-5866
  • D&D Zombie Dragon Adventure (Early Access) – 2525-9596-3235

It looks cool. I was trying to come up with a pithy saying about guns in my D&D, but I might even try to play that. Likely be like the time I tried to play 007 Golden Gun and all the kids knew where I was in the 4 corners of the TV, and kept circling behind me and killing me before I could even turn around. But cool.

My friends built this big cardboard X divider contraption and there were 4 seats, you couldn't move much. But you couldn't look at others' corner on the TV. So unwieldy but felt genius at the time, and all hanging out in the same room made the experience 100% worth it!

I have read something about being Fortnite like a future videogame-store app. Maybe WotC could publish a remake of D&D-Beyond VTT. Let's imagine players creating their own interactive-stories with the characters of Dragonlance. (Would be now Tas a pet? And Flint a hired companion) Or other using Stryxhaven to create a parody of Harry Potter and otome dating-sim videogames.

Some islands could work like Ravenloft domains, maybe to play some asymetric horror survival style "Dead by Daylight".

Gamma World is a potentially interesting IP to sell skins in Fortnite.

WotC could dare to design a Virtual TTRPG of Fortnite: Save the World where the PCs had to face "husks" and mist monsters.

Ironically, I just browsed over to ENWorld because I have some break time, and Fortnite matching is down right now.

I don't know if I'll play this collab much (the reasons I play these games are very different), but I'm super psyched about it's existence. I've said before that Fortnite is a critical pathway to keeping IP in touch with the younger generation. I'm not exaggerating when I say this could be the most important D&D marketing event since DADHAT.

Old ain't it. Just out of touch. I am 55 and still gaming. I know what Fortnite is and have played it. I don't anymore. And this won't bring me back, but it looks pretty good.
I still play games, they're just not new ones.... MechWarrior Online and Factorio keep me pretty well entertained.
