D&D General Dark Horse Comics Signs Deal with Wizards of the Coast

Dark Horse Comics announced a licensing deal with Wizards of the Coast for new comic books based on Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

Dark Horse Comics and Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast announce an exciting new publishing line beginning in 2025, with comics and graphic novels expanding the worlds of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS and MAGIC: THE GATHERING! The officially licensed publishing program will feature original stories based on the popular fantasy roleplaying and trading card games. The first of these series will debut in summer 2025.

Dark Horse Comics first collaborated with Wizards of the Coast for MAGIC: THE GATHERING tie-in comics in the late '90s with MAGIC: THE GATHERING: Gerrard's Quest and has more recently collaborated for the Stranger Things and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS miniseries. In this new era of MAGIC: THE GATHERING and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, fans can expect comic series, graphic novels, art books and more. Stay tuned for more news and announcements to follow!

Dark Horse is currently owned by Embracer Group, which is currently undergoing a corporate restructuring that has it splitting into three companies. The tabletop arm of Asmodee has already split off, while Dark Horse Comics is expected to stay with Middle-Earth Enterprises & Friends along with the company’s AAA game studio holdings.

Dark Horse Comics is best known for publishing Hellboy, but has a long history of licensed gaming comics including Cyberpunk, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Tomb Raider, The Witcher, Assassin’s Creed, HALO, and many other licensed video game properties. Dark Horse has also previously brushed up against tabletop roleplaying by publishing officially licensed Critical Role comics and worked with the previous licensed publisher of D&D comics, IDW, to publish Stranger Things Dungeons & Dragons.

No offence intended to Jim, but I really hope not. I started reading the Pathfinder comics when they first came out but really didn't like his writing or the art, so stopped collecting a few issues in.
🤷🏻‍♂️ I bought every single issue of every series, and bought all his DnD series over last several years. Jim Zub has actually written more DnD comics than any other writer.
Can’t imagine one will see fold-out maps, but stats for character, etc would be a nice addition.

I've picked up -- and put down -- a number of D&D comics, and nothing has captured me like the 90's DC series, "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons." I was delighted when an anthology came out in 2011 (4 volumes, starting here), so I could re-read to my hearts content without thumbing my tattered copies again.

Anyway if you guys know of any series with a similar vibe, please let me know! I've already collected the similar releases of the era (Dragonlance, Spelljammer, and Forgotten Realms) so I suppose I mean more recent releases with that feel. Thanks!

I agree. The late 1980's through early 1990's DC D&D comics (AD&D, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, and Spelljammer lines) had by far the best stories (including writing by Jeff Grubb) and artists (such as Rags Morales, Dave Simons, and Jan Duursema). I very much prefer their more realistic-looking art to the exaggerated, Manga style that is in IDW's D&D comics. It was especially enjoyable to see nicely-done illustrations of the various locations and personalities of Faerun.

I also picked up the DC D&D reprint volumes when they came out on better quality paper than the original comics. It's unfortunate they never printed the final volume for the Dragonlance series nor the 15-issue Spelljammer series.

It's too bad DC and TSR had a falling out which led to all the lines being canceled after only 3 years. They could have produced some amazing stuff.

Yes! I wonder "what might have been" every time I read them. There were more stories to tell for sure. I especially wanted to know what the deal was with Meredith in the Spelljammer series.

Another thing I really liked about the DC series was how they visualized the magic. It wasn't always RAW (I'm looking at you, Shield), but it definitely added some color to my "theater of the mind" as a player.
