Distinct Game Modes: Combat vs Social vs Exploration etc...

My personal goal is to generally try and hit the notes you'd see in a good fast paced novel.
I think RPG play has rather alot in common with how television progresses. Obvioulsy with the same caveats as regards books, but the focus of television on scenes and shorter story arcs is meaningful.
I think my approach - especially for party play like 4e D&D - is heavily influenced by Claremont X-Men.

Was it? How would we know?
With Joss Whedon we do know he played as a teen, in fact at least one show he made was definitely based on a campaign he ran (Firefly started as a Traveller game, and I've always wondered if Buffy/Angel may have had some Dark Conspiracy in their DNA since he would have been playing GDW stuff at the right time). But the new hotshot writers on the late 90s would have been the Red Box generation by age, yes.

"The Expanse" was a campaign before it was a series of novels/TV show as well.
