My theory on droid rights. Can that droid ve trusted to independently vote with free will?

'Palaatine for chancellor. Rgr rgr"

The senate has passed the Make Mechanus III great again bill. One trillion credits for 500 million PIA (Palapatine is Awesome) 1000 droids.

Most droids are glorified Alexa's. R2-D2 is about the only exception. Maybe Chopper.

If the droid has to follow programming its not self aware.

I read an article recently suggesting Droids in SW are enslaved and the there needs to be a liberation story about them.

I don’t think I’d want that but it does make my think about Droids in SW.
There's something to the concept, but similar stories are so common nowadays that it will feel formulaic. And it reduces some of what is unique about Star Wars into a more generic mold.

Can anyone in the Star Wars universe? Not much difference between Palpatine influencing the Senate through Dark Side influence and propaganda and him reprogramming them.

And what about cyborgs like Lobot, do they lose all rights as soon as they get a piece of hardware integrated with their brains?

Both a different though.
. A real gree thinking droid would make its on decisions for good or ill.

Cyborg it would depend. Greivous apparently had his mind messed with.

Palpatine I'm not aware of any mind control on a mass scale force power.

I have a pet theory/headcanon that there must have been a Droid uprising at some point in the Republic's past and so restraining bolts and memory wipes are part of the culture around Droid use. Sure they are useful, but they get upitty... The existence of IG-88 and other "evil" Droid strongly suggest they can gain free will or at least go bad.

Yeah old EU went further. Evil droids exist along with 2 sentient droid species.

HK-47 comes to mind. Meatbag. IG-88 is another one.

It is my understanding that a lack of memory wipes leads to an increasingly complex personality for the droid, which can functionally be considered free will. R2D2 is a good example. Full memory of all nine films.
