The light armored swordsman is a fantasy archetype sharing characteristics with both the Fighter (Martial Weapons and Battlemaster Maneuvers) and Rogue (saving throw proficiencies and proficiency in light armor) and a skill set that falls somewhere in between. Unfortunately, in my opinion it has not been well served in most editions of D&D including 5e despite being recognized as deserving of its own class by a popular AD&D 1e third party, at least one popular OSR designer, and a worthy archetype by the designers of several other games. I think Khaalis's variant does an excellent job capturing it for 5e. Personally,

Not only do I think Khaalis did an excellent job creating a variant fighter for 5e that captures the light fighter concept from level one, I think he avoids certain drawbacks of just using the PHB fighter or Rogue and then waiting until 3rd level to take the Fighter Battlemaster or Rogue Swashbuckler (if it is being used)... or worse relying on multi-classing between Fighter and Rogue. Furthermore, Khaalis did not just create a great fighter variant. He also provides 7 archetypes that provide further customization to capture variations of the concept from literature and film, three new fighting styles, three new maneuvers, and a new feat

Finally, this variant probably could have been listed in a paragraph or two as the changes affect first level, but I like having it treated in full class format for easier reference
