What's the best fantasy game for solo play?

Check out Me, Myself and Die on YouTube for some ideas and inspiration on solo role playing. Trevor uses a different system each series of his show. The Dungeon Dive is another good channel devoted to solo role-playing and dungeon board games.

Must You Tell Your Players What Adventure You Are Running?

That’s an interesting wrinkle - if I was running a sandbox campaign where the PCs were hunting up rumours of different ruins or treasures to search out then their characters might well do research and rumour gathering. In that case I would definitely give them IC clues about what the adventure...

Must You Tell Your Players What Adventure You Are Running?

I would discuss a campaign pitch, and if that is ‘I want to run XYZ’ then it would naturally involve stating the module. But if the pitch is ‘I want to run a picaresque campaign which will involve a mix of modules and home brew adventures, built around the central idea of X’ then I wouldn’t...

What magic system that uses some form of power points (e.g. casting spell x costs 3 points) is your favorite?

This list already has two of my favourites - GURPS Ritual Path Magic and Savage Worlds. To give a shout out to something at the opposite end of the spectrum - Rolemaster’s magic still holds a place in my heart. Over 200 different spell lists, with spell levels up to 75 (IIRC) when you get all...

What are you favorite RPG genres?

Fantasy of different stripes by quite a wide margin for our group, and myself too. Fantasy is such a broad genre with interesting sub-genres (high magic, low magic, magi-tech, gritty and so on) which means you can get a wide range of different campaign feels in there. It has the advantage of...

    Sci Fi Crit Tables

Spacemaster is probably the uber alles of sci-fi with crits, and the PDF is reasonably priced.

Upcoming Superhero RPGs Coincidence or Zeitgeist

To the original question, I think it’s a little bit of option A and a little bit of option B. Superhero media is at an all time high, so probably has more fans than it has had in a long time. That means the intersect between supers fans and TTRPG fans is probably at its highest ever? I think...

Mode Genres, Setting genres, and how we make "Games"

There was a GURPS Alpha Centauri back in the day, so why not?

Mode Genres, Setting genres, and how we make "Games"

SWADE is great for “shotgun ‘thulu” where you are taking on loads of cultists. It would be my system of choice for Masks of Nyarlathotep. But for horror closer to CoC standards with academics and careful investigation it would then probably be a GURPS implementation for me.

Mode Genres, Setting genres, and how we make "Games"

This concept resonates with me. I like to play a variety of games across genre and theme. I would categorise things like sci-fi versus fantasy as genre, while heist versus hex crawl would fit into the theme. I also think in terms of the style of game - action adventure versus gritty for example...

    Deadlands: Lost Colony (SWADE) Post-Mortem

I’m just coming to the climax of a SWADE game which has been running a year, and a as a player in another campaign which has been running for about two years. Both have been smooth experiences. YMMV

    Deadlands: Lost Colony (SWADE) Post-Mortem

I recently got Shadow of the Weird Wizard which is a pretty interesting medium weight fantasy game. Ever tried that, @Retreater ?

    Best Tolkien Art

My parents had this on a chopping board, hung up in our kitchen when I was young - before I ever got into role playing. Which is interesting because they aren’t particularly fantasy fans. My first exposure to the hobbit was an audio adaption which I think was on the radio.

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

My most recent RPG related purchase was two strong hooks… Why, you ask? To hang this fantastic artefact… That’s technically a blanket, but we all know it’s a cloth map of Magnamund, the world where the Lone Wolf books and games are all set.

Epic/High fantasy game for a one-shot introductory game

Dragon Warriors is one of my favourite old school RPGs, I played it back when it first came out and probably played it as much as BECMI D&D. The out-of-combat stuff is a little thin by modern standards but the game is still solid. I wouldn’t really describe it as epic or high fantasy...

RPG Evolution: Game Cancelled, Now What?

We have two groups, a weekly one of GM+3 and a monthly one of GM+5. For the monthly one we will only play one-down, and since it is so infrequent we would negotiate a different weekend in the month to make that happen. For the weekly game we try to only role-play with everyone there...

    TTRPG gaming tables

I’m considering buying a gaming table, but for board games. With RPGs the physical components are reliably put away between sessions but with a long board game we might want to split a session in two and that would mean leaving stuff out. Even though I have a ‘dedicated’ gaming room it gets...

    How often do you play?

I have two groups, with a large overlap of members. One plays weekly on a mid-week evening, the other plays monthly on a weekend day-evening slot. Works out as an average of weekly as the mid-week session includes board gaming too.

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

The new option doesn’t quite capture it, but it’s close enough. We played plenty 5e but got tired of it. Last D&D-ish campaign we played (about a year ago) was Level Up. One of our occasional GMs fancies trying 5:24 next, which should start in a month or two when I complete my Savage Worlds...

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

There isn’t an option for my situation: not currently playing D&D, someone in our group wants to try running the new D&D rules next.
