D&D 5E Bleak Expectations: A Dickensian Adventure for 12th Level Characters

How is the monthly version going to work? Will the articles still be available individually, or will it be one big PDF per month?

Unearthed Arcana Kiss of Mephistopheles: Unbalancing?

A warlock player in one of my games wants to take the "Kiss of Mephistopheles" invocation from Unearthed Arcana. The character's pact is Great Old One rather than Fiend, but we've reflavored GOO to fit the setting, and the character meets all the other prerequisites. However, I'm concerned that...

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

Marvel didn't invent the term "multiverse," nor do they have a monopoly on it. And their recent multiversal stuff hasn't been all that popular either, so I don't know how much it has in the way of coattails to ride.

D&D (2024) Is Monster Manual 2025 compatible with 2014 Characters?

Can you give an example of a more difficult choice from the 2024 manual? (I'm having trouble picturing how this looks.)

    D&D 5E Handling Morale Checks

I get what you're saying, but I don't want to take the time to come up with individual personalities for each of the five gnoll bandits attacking the party. I'm happy to let the dice decide whether they're all brave and stupid or whether some of them have a sense of self-preservation. I...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

AFAIK, the term fell out of favor because of the influence of Edward Said's book Orientalism, which presented it as a representing a harmful viewpoint. But from what I saw (and I live in a town with a very large East Asian population), it went from common usage to just being replaced, without...

    D&D 5E Handling Morale Checks

I think part of the problem is that morale isn't purely a matter of wisdom. I feel like for some monsters at least, charisma might be a better stat to roll on.

    Second person plural pronoun

I would just say "Your seats at the table." The fact that "seats" is plural provides the context that "you" is also plural.

    Second person plural pronoun

"Y'all" has not become standard usage in all parts of the US. It still sounds southern to me (I'm a midwesterner). I agree that for formal writing, "you all" or "all of you" is the way to go. Or something like "You and your companions." ("You and your companions find yourselves in a tavern.")

    D&D 5E Handling Morale Checks

Your system is interesting! I'm not sure I will remember the math enough to do it quickly on the fly. If I have it right, you figure the difference between the enemy and the PCs, and if the PCs are higher level you subtract the difference from the save DC, and if the enemy is higher level, you...

    D&D 5E Handling Morale Checks

How do you make a Will save in 5E?

    D&D 5E Handling Morale Checks

You're right, of course. I'd forgotten about it, but that's probably where I got the system I've been using. I'd really like a better one, though. I don't really like having a flat number for everyone, or only rolling for the leader.

    D&D 5E Handling Morale Checks

One thing I wish D&D 5E had is a (better) formal system for morale checks, to see when enemies run away. I usually do a wisdom check for the enemy and just kind of eyeball it: if they roll high, they realize it's time to run, and if they roll low, they stay and fight. But this seems...

D&D 5E So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

I agree. I've been running a high-level no-magic-item game off and on since 5E started, and it works fine.

D&D (2024) Is anyone at WOTC paying attention to what they print any more?

Is that particular typo yours or theirs? 😲 Also, regarding the carrion crawler stat block: I wonder if that was originally a CON save (to resist poison), and then someone changed it to DEX (to dodge the tentacles) without noticing how it interacted with the condition.

D&D 5E So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

When I first introduced 5E to a group of friends who played the heck out of 2E back in the day, their immediate comment was "It feels like 2nd edition with cleaned up math." They didn't elaborate, but apparently it did immediately make them think of 2E. The most recent edition they had played...

Project Sigil Sigil, WotC 3D vtt game automation no more?

It makes sense to me. The more you automate, the less the experience becomes a TTRPG and the more it becomes a video game.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I have, but only among the sort of people who hang out in places like ENworld. In other words, they're fine with playing TTRPGs, but playing D&D specifially will get you side-eye in some communities.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

IIRC, he was noting that they were saying "fastest-selling" rather than "biggest-selling." The original 5E PHB was a much smaller deal, so it probably took a few months to build up steam.
