D&D 5E Make a pirate island come alive (Forgotten Realms)

The Seachest- A small shop in what used to be a bunk room. The hammock bunks are full of a chaotic mix of junk, jewelry, and gear. Everything seems to have just been tossed there, but the owner insists there's an organization underlying it all. She and an aquatic friend gather stuff from...

D&D 5E Knocked unconscious in water

Yeah, I definitely don't want to kill anyone - but I want that threat to be on the table. In the past, I've been an overly protective GM - I had a 6 month long campaign with three players and only 2 KOs the whole time. So I'm trying to up my difficulty in encounters a bit. I think the...

WotC Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance Video Game Announcement Trailer

Looks like another one of those Warhammer slaughter games - Vermintide and the like. The stinger toward the end, though, looked like a proper RPG. This is little to go on, but hasn't hooked me at all.

D&D 5E Knocked unconscious in water

Cheers guys - I like these ideas already. Especially the hidden death saves. That sort of tense experience is what I'm looking for. I had trouble finding rules for lack of oxygen. All the underwater stuff in the DMG assumes water breathing, and in the PHB we get those breath holding rules...

    D&D 5E Are Barbarian’s “Meh”

Boy, this thread... So I posted on the first page about bailing on a Barbarian in favor of something more complex. I think it's worth noting that very few people are talking about the type of game you're in. In a dungeon crawl, a Barbarian is a great combat class (tank of all tanks, imo), and...

D&D 5E Knocked unconscious in water

So, I'm working on a short, first level adventure for some friends. One of the things I want to include is a dangerous terrain fight. Here's what I'm thinking: In waist high water, there's a weak water weird (reskinned dust mephit, since this is 1st level.) Now, dust mephit has sleep as an...

D&D 5E Practice and Training: Feats vs ASI

Some feats may not match your idea, as well. Magic Initiate, specifically might be more of a long study instead of picked up on the field. I like the concept and rationale, though. My main concern would be how this plays in game. If two party members take a feat and two take ASI, where do you...

    D&D 5E Are Barbarian’s “Meh”

Literally just texted my GM about retiring the Barbarian I'm playing. Here's why: I built an optimized Half-orc Barbarian with a Greataxe. He's got a strong personality and I enjoy him as a character. But, the party is two new players with a newish GM (I've been GMing for ages, this is the...

No Prebuff - Round 1 - Damage Rankings

From the section "Casting a Spell" in the PHB: "You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action. " Hexblades...

No Prebuff - Round 1 - Damage Rankings

RAW, Hex only applies extra damage when you hit with an attack - Magic Missile is straight damage, not an attack roll, so I guess it wouldn't apply. Definitely up for interpretation, though. Also, I don't think you can cast two spells in one turn.

What do you want to do better as a GM?

This is pretty close to what I do. My games tend to be more mysteries and investigations rather than fights (just what my group prefers), but in general I do the same. I've also had that roadtrip hit stormy weather and go completely off to a different direction - which leads me to... This is...

D&D General Why do you play non-human races?

Mechanics. I've never had a GM make the otherness of these races stand out significantly, and haven't done it well myself. Our games are light-hearted, so these choice result in little more than 'dwarf drinks, orc crushes, elf elves'

    D&D 5E Philosophy: Devil's Sight

I would assume there's some sort of shift when changing light backgrounds. If you walk out of a lit bathroom into your dark house, it takes a second for your eyes to adjust. I consider the same for these abilities - not long enough to effect rolls or combat, but some sort of shift happening that...

D&D General Looking For D&D Short Story to introduce D&D environment.

You can check out Threetoe's stories from the Dwarf fortress site. They're generic fantasy - a bit dark, perhaps. Several include multiple characters, but perhaps not exactly the 4-man-team that's classic DnD. http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_story.html

Micro Game at the dinner table

Anything in the Lasers and Feelings/Swords and Scrolls family will do. Rules light and goofy - needs a GM, but we've played successfully by rotating GMs for scenes.
