D&D 5E Question about Thavius Kreeg in Descent into Avernus (possible spoilers)

Thavius Kreeg is not a devil, just an evil, weak-willed man. There are things that the PCs can do in DiA that might have an impact on his status, though. Sounds like you're actually playing it, so I don't want to go into too much more detail.

    D&D 5E Ptolus for 5e

One of the key things about Ptolus is that it's essentially an expression of the 3e rules. Monte Cook took the rules as physics and tried to extrapolate what a setting shaped by those physics would look like. I will be very curious to see how the world is modified by 5e rules, if in fact it...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Why 3.5 Worked

Interesting! Over the years I've seen several people claim that 3.5 was inferior to 3.0, but I couldn't understand what they were talking about. I saw the fixes to the ranger and bard, haste and harm, trimming down skills, etc., and I figured it was all (or mostly) to the good. But I never...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Why 3.5 Worked

I believe Bacon Bits is referring to the cumulative -5 penalty on iterative attacks in 3.x. The later attacks in the sequence become quite unlikely to hit, but the player will obviously still take them, because why wouldn't they? It becomes really painful when dealing with dual-wielding...

D&D 5E Compare Spell Jammer to Starfinder

For what it's worth, the Acq Inc C Team, which is considerably less silly than the main-stage A team, had its own Spelljammer arc this season. There were many over-the-top, bizarre moments, but it was mostly not played for laughs.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Diversity in D&D Third Edition

I will confess that I did not realize Hennet was Asian until now.

WotC New D&D Stream Replaces Dice, Camera, Action!

Wow, I had no idea about any of the madness linked in the original post. I've spent the last couple of months catching up on the Acq Inc C Team. The DCA folks were very frequent guests, and I enjoyed their appearances.

    D&D 3E/3.5 3E and the Feel of D&D

I quite like this one. And even though I don't think this is very good in a technical sense, it tells one hell of a compelling story. (Sorry about the size; I can't find a better copy). And I agree about Dark Sun.

    D&D 3E/3.5 3E and the Feel of D&D

I generally preferred 3e art to 2e art, for some of the reasons Tweet mentions. I often found 2e art too high-fantasy for the swords-and-sorcery type game I preferred. That said, early 3e art really emphasized static, individual portrait of PCs, which were quite boring. Later on they started...

D&D 5E What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

OK, fair enough, I see that. He's contradicting the rules as written here; I'm not aware of anything in the actual rulebooks that supports his statement (perhaps there's something in the Rules Compendium, which I don't own). But if you want to use this as a canonical source, sure, then it works.

D&D 5E What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

Quote, please? I've been giving you SRD quotes. All I'm getting back are your recollections, which so far have turned out to be wrong. I'm happy to concede if I'm wrong, but so far you've shown nothing to support your view.

D&D 5E What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

Nope, still won't work. As I mentioned before, activating a scroll is a standard action, no matter what the casting time is for the underlying spell.

D&D 5E What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

I believe that's incorrect. The effect from grave strike ends just before your next turn. If you used grave strike from a wand or scroll, you'd be able to use it in an AoO. But it won't apply to your next regularly scheduled attack.

D&D 5E What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

Perhaps I'm mistaken. Care to quote some rules to back up your statement? I have these: How are you using a wand or scroll as a swift action? I will gladly defer to someone with greater rules knowledge in this area.

D&D 5E What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

There were a few swift action spells in Spell Compendium (grave strike, vine strike, etc.) that allowed you to sneak attack various monster types for one round. These spells were essentially worthless when put in magic item form, because the magic items in question required a standard action to...

What's the best and worst D&D book you own from any edition?

Best: Ptolus. Several lifetimes of great gaming in there. Honorable mentions: 1e DMG, 3e Manual of the Planes. Worst: 4e MM 1. Never has a core book been made so completely obsolete. There's almost nothing in there that's even usable, let alone inspiring. Dishonorable mentions: Book of...

    Basic D&D, Holmes Edition - a review

Holmes was my first D&D. I remember it fondly -- especially the sad little chits that came with it, in lieu of dice -- but I was young (9) and couldn't really engage with the rules in any meaningful sense. For me, B2 was more of a rulebook than the actual blue book was; it gave me a better...

[Trailer] The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I think Legolas's presence is a good indication that the second installment will be no less overstuffed than the first.
