    Desert of Desolation...sort of

It's interesting. There are some similarities to what the RPG Live! community over at WotC is doing right now. WotC has put the Knowledge Arcana staff in charge of helping the community build a setting in which online play can take place. The players have, through chat, submitted their ideas...

Why did WotC start the Polymorph "Errata Wars"?

I think that RPGA play could really get spoiled by leaving the polymorph as originally written. Then again, for all I know, the RPGA just banned the spell--that would be easiest. Dave

MINIS! Where do you buy yours?

I usually get most of my minis in the following manner. 1) I go to the minis pre-release events, usually with my son and sometimes a friend of his. I buy their way in, so I get the minis. This nets be 4 or 6 boosters usually. One of us usually places in the top 4, so that's usually another...

    4.0

We know that it will excite some folks and disappoint others. We know that there will be unfortunate typos and minor errors that get by the editors and that some people will post about this like it's the end of the world. But, none of that is really about 4e, it's about people. So, no, we...

Merging Called Shots into Critical Hits

Something along these lines seems advantageous. It is a bit tricky. Not only should a higher-multiplier have some advantageous effect, but it seems that a broader threat range should count for something too. Still, I like the overall idea and look forward to the finished product. Dave

    Non-Spellcasting Ranger?

I would suggest going with something campaign-specific. If you are imagining a campaign where rangers are simply non-spellcasters, and that's that, then, yes, it would make sense to buff them up a little. The Complete Champion suggestion is good. Meeki's suggestion about the Knowledge skills...

Merging Called Shots into Critical Hits

Cool ideas so far. One issue strikes me as a bit strange though. Suppose someone uses a d8 weapon with a x2 modifier. Suppose that, after modifiers and good dice, the damage dealt on the critical is 50. Suppose someone else uses a d12 weapon with a x3 modifier. Suppose that, after modifiers...

An interesting conundrum with the DI...thoughts?

QFT. Speculation can be fun and all that, but I think we need to wait this one out and see what unfolds. Dave

Spellless paladins and rangers. Bonus feats worth giving up spellcasting?

I think that alternates of both paladins and rangers can be made to be completely competitive by substituting feat acquisition for spells. Lots of people have tried making spell-free paladins and spell-free rangers. There are probably all kinds of existing examples you can find if you look. Dave

    Lowering Half-Celestial Level Adjust

The half-celestial gets a LOT of good stuff. I'd consider making a new template, toning things down across the board, and doing so with the goal of forcing it into a LA+2 package from the beginning. Dave

[World Design] Implications of a longer day

I'm no expert, but I'd imagine that if a planet with a 30-hour light followed by 30-hour dark system evolved over millions of years, that the anatomies of the critters thereon would have to reflect (pardon the pun) this. On most of Earth, I'd wager, creatures that are, for instance, nocturnal...

    Most powerful non-magical class combo

Barbarian/Rogue/Ranger/Fighter Maximize all the benefits of each, get a sneak attack against a favored enemy during a rage, with Power Attack, or whatever... Dave

    Animal Companions and Polymorph

Using a high level spell to kill an enemy's animal companion doesn't sound weird--at all. So what if it's polymorph? I've always wondered about casting true resurrection on someone's dragonhide armor as well. Anyway, to the original point, I think the others here have covered it fairly...

    Blind Characters

Oh man, the jokes that could come up are endless. I hope someone plays a bard in this group and that the old man character lasts for at least a little while. Dave

    Monk/wizard cross class

I have a player playing a...monk/sorcerer/rogue/fighter/order of the bow initiate. Specifically: Rog3/Mnk8/Sor3/Ftr4/Obi2 Oh, and to top it off, she has an amulet that allows her to cast her true strike spell as a move action three times a day. I mean, that's all it does, but, hell, that's...

What do you think D&D is missing?

Not to sound like chicken little, but isn't this the tendency? In each previous edition, the buildup of material became burdensome, and then at some point thereafter, we started anew. I am a big fan of hero points and make extensive use of them in my home game. Dave

House rule #1: "You can attempt to go anywhere."

Ditto. (Wow, someone else has the same #1 house rule that I have.) Dave

    Blind Characters

I have recently played a character that was blind (no eyes, they were gouged out in his youth). The campaign (World of Warcraft RPG) did not have monks, and I wanted to do that as well. So, I ended up taking levels in Rogue and Fighter to approximate it. And, I used some feats I found here on...

    New Spell: Does it Work?

Would the effect trigger if an Evil caster from, say, 400 feet away, targeted an ally of Avagadro with a fireball? Or does the "attack" have to target the caster of this spell in order for the spell to trigger? It seems okay to me. At first I thought it was a little weak for 4th level, but...

+2 to cha and no counter balance stat: LA +0

There's this lecture in the books about avoiding metagaming, and, I understand, the idea is that we're to avoid it during play. But, it's impossible. (I'm going somewhere with this, honestly.) When you play a character who takes a feat at 3rd level for no other reason than because it's a...
