Pathfinder 1E What are the advantages to Pathfinder -- for DMs?

Agreed. FantasyCraft and 4e are both excellent models for how to make DM friendly monster stat blocks.

Pathfinder 1E What are the advantages to Pathfinder -- for DMs?

The only advantage to a DM is familiarity if you are already comfortable with the system. There is a lot of adventure support, but I have found the adventure quality of even Paizo's lauded AP's to be terribly uneven. Still, its nice to have a campaign laid out for you if your group doesn't mind...

    Old Fashioned Rules Question

Makes sense. I guess I misread the OP's post. I was assuming he missed with Rogue's Recovery. If he missed on Nasty Backswing, then used a utility to recover it and then immediately use it again, I could see where the no double free actions would come into play. I still don't see a huge balance...

    Old Fashioned Rules Question

Sure, why not? I don't see any hidden balance issue or game breaking exploit here.

Mutants & Masterminds --> Marvel Super Heroes?

Yeah, definitely. Marvel strives for a certain personal street level tone with their stories. Whereas DC stories tend to feel a bit more mythic in tone. I love them both. The intriguing irony is that they seem to have somewhat flipped that tone around in their recent films. Marvel has the over...

You are also responding to an OP who started this thread almost 7 years ago. :)

Mutants & Masterminds --> Marvel Super Heroes?

lolwut? Calling the Marvel universe simulationist is the funniest thing I've heard all day. I read an issue once where Magneto used his powers to pull raw ore out of the ground and fabricated an entire working modern day Lear Jet complete with functioning avionic intstruments, windows, onboard...

Mutants & Masterminds --> Marvel Super Heroes?

Check out the Roll Call forum links earlier in this thread. People on the M&M boards have statted out virtually every Marvel character at all sorts of different PL's for both 3e and 2e M&M. Including some ready to play builds using PL 10 and 150 points like a PC would. Its easy to copy them over...

Help a party of five 20th level PCs defeat an Ancient Red Dragon

In the interest of full disclosure, I'll mention that I use the Escalation Die from 13th Age in my 4e games.

Help a party of five 20th level PCs defeat an Ancient Red Dragon

If your party has two leaders and are ruthlessly efficient tactical killing machines like my players are, I may even go so far as to give the dragon two initiative counts and let it act twice a round. But that could be too much. It depends on what you think your players can handle. I like to...

Help a party of five 20th level PCs defeat an Ancient Red Dragon

If the party is 20th level and the dragon is 30th level, then just have the Star Blood grant a +10 bonus to attacks and all defenses and for the duration of the encounter. It also grants 50 temp HPs that last the entire encounter. Done. Its simple and easy to remember and generally works...

    Co-DMing

So, I played in an awesome co-DMed game in high school. One of the DMs was an aspiring novelist and she came up with background info, did all the nation building, and the main plotline of the game. She also loved to role-play the NPCs, particularly the female NPCs. The other DM handled most of...

4th edition, The fantastic game that everyone hated.

4e is AMAZING! It doesn't get nearly the love it deserves. I run it in a free wheeling OSR style and find the rules really make it easy to role-play and promote a lot of narrative creativity by the players and the DM. Having a robust tactical combat system too is just icing on the cake. :)

D&D 5E To all the Play-testers: Is it worth it?

Well, I think that really depends on what you like. The first playtest I didn't care for. But they have made some definite progress over the past few iterations. While, its still an unfinished game, I'm feeling more positive about it. Also, for me its not a binary issue. Buying and playing 5e...

Pathfinder 1E What are your Pathfinder houserules?

My PF house rules, though I'm currently running 4e and not PF. I ran the entire Rise of the Runelords AP with these rules to great success and my players loved it. Player power doesn't intimidate me as a DM, so these rules might be too much for some people's games. -You start with 14 in every...

    D&D 5E Money in D&D Next?

One cool thing we did back in my AD&D days was have to deal with the fact that there weren't really any banks around. We'd acquire these incredible amounts of money, but had few safe ways of storing it somewhere and keeping it accessible since our PCs were constantly traveling. So we often...

    D&D 4E Late to the D&D 4E Bandwagon - First Impressions

If the time shock of 30 seconds is too much at first, you can start with a minute. Either way, players should be paying attention and should know what they plan on doing as soon as their turn comes up. Also, emphasize that its ok to just skip their minor action most of the time. As turns speed...

    D&D 4E Late to the D&D 4E Bandwagon - First Impressions

I'm a veteran 4e player and DM and have a few thoughts. On improv using the 4e framework - Great! That's the stuff of great games. 4e does a great job of supporting this for DMs by providing a nice chart of recommended DCs and damage expressions by level. I do a lot of on the fly adjudication...

    Armchair Gamer's Flavors of D&D

Indeed, they are not exclusive categories. Many games and styles did overlap. This is merely an effort to codify the most commonly seen tendencies. And again, these styles are also reflected somewhat in the actual products put out by TSR and later by WotC. You can clearly see the Paladins and...

Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

No worries, mate. We all like different things in our games. :) 13th Age is all about the players as Big Damn Heroes who make a difference. Grim and gritty it absolutely is not.
